A hopeful

by LeeMR on 1 Jun 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Hello, my name is Mirim Lee! I would like to introduce my portfolio, which tells the story of the meeting between a retired robot and a wooden boy.

A hopeful

Once unfamiliar with everything and appearing naive, Robot eventually became worn out and retired as time passed. Breaking away from the repetitive daily routine, he arrives at a destination, looking forward to the remaining free life. There, for the first time, he encounters a wonderful friend unlike the mechanical things he's used to.

ROBOT & WOODEN BOY

Robot

The robot was primarily based on the MECHATRONICS WEGO model kit. Its design is cute and lacks an overly advanced futuristic vibe, so I added a diesel engine to give it a more vintage feel.

In keeping with the concept of a retired robot, I focused on depicting worn and rusted materials. The robot's diesel engine was created by combining various diesel engine parts into a form that attaches to its back.

Wooden boy

I referenced the appearance of a young boy but wanted it to have a slightly different feel from a human. So, I used yellow sclera, golden irises, elf-like ears, and slightly altered facial proportions.

When creating the 3D model of the wooden boy, I couldn't replicate it exactly as the concept art due to the sense of dissonance, but it was a task to enhance my experience by considering alternatives and applying them as closely as possible.

MODELING

SCENE

Gorge Scene

I thought that a layout using vanishing points and a canyon with limited light would be the perfect setting to represent the hopeful first journey of a retired robot, unsure of what luck awaits.

Swamp & cave scene

Leaving the canyon, passing through the swamp, with clouds gathering in the sky and rain falling, and sometimes resting in caves. This scene was created to show his journey, albeit briefly.

Swamp scene aimed to evoke a lush feel while capturing the essence of the marsh. I selected plants that thrive in such environments for the MASH work. Floating debris in the stagnant water was represented using Vray decals.

The cave scene aimed to create a warm atmosphere inside despite the dark and cold appearance outside due to the rain. I added lamps to provide warmth inside. I wanted to give the impression that the robot is taking a break.

Amphitheatre Ruins Scene

I was inspired by an amphitheater to create this piece. The main form and textures were based on the Aspendos amphitheater in Turkey, while additional details and textures were secondarily inspired by the Colosseum.

After calculating the length while bent, I straightened it for easier work. To create the look of collapsed and worn edges, I used Houdini for RBD (rigid body dynamics) work and SideFX's edge damage feature. The most challenging part was having to use Houdini for the first time for this task. After texturing, I used the bend function to form the shape of the amphitheater.

Finally, in conclusion, creating this portfolio made me realize how much time and effort it takes to complete a single piece of work. I will continue to strive to become an amazing CG artist!

Thank you for your time!
