Empusa, Amber Guardian
Character concept/ Keyframe illustration of Empusa.
Update - 13 Apr 2020
I also made an animated version of the illustration as a foil card!
Update - 13 Apr 2020
Worked on a value and color rough which I ended up changing quite abit.
I realised that the background was a little too dark and my character did not pop out of the background enough, so I tweaked the values and colours a little, added more details and finished up the illustration.
Update - 12 Apr 2020
Decided to figure out Empusa's design! I totally redrew the composition to make it more centralised on her instead.
Update - 16 Mar 2020
Revamped the composition. I added soldiers advancing toward the shrine where Empusa and the monks are.
This time I started off with a 3D base for the spatial awareness, then painted in and added details over the rendered image with the help of photo textures and Mixamo.
Update - 14 Mar 2020
Grayscale update of the concept thumbnail! May change the composition here and there as I go along. Figured I'll use two humans for scale and to give Empusa a fearsome/ powerful vibe.
Feel free to leave comments and critique!

Empusa, Amber Guardian
"They burned and poisoned the land, felled the great trees, slaughtered the animals...Now they're coming for Gaia's essence. Empusa, hear our cry."
Concept
My idea for this project is to create a forest guardian, summoned in the wake of forest destruction. I referenced rainforests and ancient temples for the environment, and a flower mantis for Empusa. Her name also stems from the Family of plant mimicking mantises, Empusidae. The concept of the illustration is to depict a scene of Empusa's arrival, and the essence stone she guards.I tried my best to avoid making Empusa look like a friendly fairy, but instead an enraged and dangerous fairy guardian, summoned to protect. She will be wielding two scythes and exude an aura of dominance and fear.
I chose one of the 8 thumbnails I made, and adjusted the composition and figures within the scene. Following this will be a grayscale rendering to flesh out more lighting and details.
