It's a 3D Animation project that I realized at the end of 2nd year at ESMA Toulouse. We had to animate an interaction between a biped and a quadruped in 200 frames, with bodyphysic and facing.

Round of applause for our sponsors

The BIQUAD project was the longest and coolest animation project I did during my second year at ESMA Toulouse ! From the beginning, I was super excited to see the result of my work. Also, I wanted to challenge myself by combining 3D animation and 2D animation ! And today, it is with pride that I create this post.

To realize this animation project, I went through several important steps for the realization of a short film. So here is my whole process !

1 - Research

At first, I had only one idea: a battle between Azula and a predatory feline. I chose these two characters because their natural character was similar. And wanting to make them interact would necessarily cause a tense and dangerous situation.

And with this first idea in mind, I started my research !

2 - StoryBoard

It was during the creation of the storyboard that we created our future film ! This step is essential. We have to choose the number of shots to realize as well as the different framings and their meanings. For example, I asked myself : How to show that Azula is watched by the feline ? Does the feline attack her first ? How would Azula defend herself ? Well, by attacking !

Every detail is reflected in order to have the best possible reading in our images.

3 - Layout

Start of project production. I create a reference scene of the circular environment with polygons of different colors to distinguish the characters. I set up the different cameras and adjust their focal length. This step is used to validate my storyboard and modify it if some transitions do not work. In addition, it is with the Layout that I start timing my animation.

4 - Blocking / Spline

For the Block, I started with the key poses of my animation. Then by adding breakdows, I made my animation more leaky until polish it :) My references help me a lot !

After the animation was done, i add textures related to rigg and embellished my playblast with some options.

5 - Extra 2D Animation

For 2D animation, I took each image of my 3D animation and entered them in my ClipStudioPaint software. Then, thanks to some youtube tutorials and my previous research, I animated flames and electricity ! What a fun !

Thanks for reading  :)
