3D model/sculpture of Rex from Ruinworld for the 3D Modeling assignment at ESAT. May, 2024.
When choosing a character to sculpt, I considered several options. Among them, I found some models to be fairly simple and others much more complex. The character I ultimately chose was Rex from the graphic novel Ruinworld. The reference illustration is by Derek Laufman, the author of the book.
1. Blocking
First, the blocking process consisted of defining the general shapes of the sculpture starting from cubes. From this initial step, I wanted to clearly define each element with its position, rotation, and scale.
2. Refining
Subsequently, the refinement process involved applying subdivision modifiers to each element, as well as displaying the objects with smooth shading.
3. Sculpting
The sculpting process was the most complex. I aimed to emphasize the expression on the face with a three-dimensionality that would allow for creating interesting light plays. I also had to subdivide several elements of the statue enough to capture the details and paint with the necessary resolution in the final phase.
4. Painting + Materials
Finally, I applied the appropriate materials to each object and painted the patterns of the head, bandages, and tentacle directly from Sculpt mode. When designing a base for the character as part of the environment, I decided to focus more on the lighting and opted for a black background to achieve greater contrast. With the final result, I aimed to represent a clean and detailed statue of Laufman's character on a themed base.
