Almost a year ago, I decided to pursue my Master's in VFX and dive into the world of 3D. Previously, I was more focused on design. This is my first complete environment in Unreal Engine 5! So far, I'm really enjoying the journey! Looking forward to your feedback!

O'Creagh's Run - Noah Mantel - Environment inspired by RDR 2

About

"O'Creagh's Run" is a detailed environment project developed in Unreal Engine 5, inspired by the picturesque lake from the game Red Dead Redemption 2, one of my favorite games. O'Creagh's Run is my favorite location in the game, a large body of water located in the Grizzlies East region of the Ambarino territory, just north of the Three Sisters mountain range. This project was part of my first year in the Higher Master's Degree in Visual Effects at FX Animation School, Barcelona. Special thanks to my teacher, Pau Casas, for his guidance and support.

The task for this project was to create a realistic environment. While the current character in the scene might make it look more like a game environment, I am currently working on creating Arthur Morgan for my Grooming project. I plan to replace the current character, who appears somewhat game-like, with a more detailed and realistic version of Arthur Morgan later.

Tools

The landscape was created using Unreal Engine 5, with tools like Maya for modeling objects and Substance Painter for materials and textures. Fluid Flux was used to achieve realistic water effects, while various Niagara systems were implemented for animating birds, animals, and fire. Many assets were sourced from Quixel Megascans, allowing for high-quality and detailed elements.

Challenges & Solutions

A major challenge was finding the right plants and other landscape elements for this environment. Color grading and matching the different assets were addressed using LUTs from Davinci Resolve. Another challenge was creating the fire, animals, and characters, which involved working with the Niagara system in Unreal Engine 5.

Learning & Growth

This project not only improved my technical skills in Unreal Engine 5 but also ignited my passion for creating realistic environments. Working with Nanite was also very exciting, as it allowed for incredibly detailed assets and improved performance. I learned a lot, especially how to properly use the Sequencer, how to implement animations correctly, and created my first complete environment. It was a valuable learning experience demonstrating the powerful and versatile capabilities of Unreal Engine 5.
