by Tim0thyF on 1 Jun 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Here is a collection of 4 of my released animations this year, focussing on Environment creation. All of these were produced in Cinema4D and Octane. These were all personal projects for my group, trying to incorparate new skills each project, and end up on a higher level each time

2024 Environment Exploration / Creation ( Full CG)

Dawn of the Narcos: Flight Through the Andes

Full CG scene i created to test my environment skills. I created a story, characters and sculpted this short around looking like a fake "film documentary" trailer. Terrain was made in Gaea and textured procedurally inside octane. Foliage / Vegetation created in speedtree and textured inside octane. Scatters were all driven by data maps from Gaea and additional painting / free hand scattering. Composiitng done in After Effects and grading done in Davinci Resolve. Overall, this scene took me a couple days to put together but the end result is fantastic.

The goal was to make people not even question that what they just watched was CG. Initially the plan for this was to be a series of short clips in a sequence, relating to the Narco story, but time constraints put a halt on that. For now, in my opinion, this stands incredibley well as a trailer for the project. Asking around to a couple non CG artists and people, a lot assumed all i added was the music and text. I'd say my goal was hit, but i do still see a lot of room for improvement.

Zack Snyder's Justice League 2021 - Inspired Environment

Following the same process as "Dawn of the Narcos", both close and far terrain was created in Gaea, brought back into Cinema 4D and textured procedurally inside Octane. This scene started as something completely different but over the course of a month or 2 i kept changing it and slowly straying away from my reference.

Again this is all CG, using houdini to simulate a very basic calm lake, quixel assets to scatter some realistic debri on the ground and finishing it off with some vegetation. I had other plans that fell through for this project so i wasn't able to show it off in all its glory, but i think the sole environment itself is still pretty cool to look at. It was my first project after efficiently streamlining my workflow, and the result looks fantastic.

Quhixzenour's Enterance

This was produced entirely in Cinema 4D and Octane. Using new Cinema 4D tools for scattering and layout. Gaea was used for the foreground terrain, utilising the data maps for more detailed scatters. Background terrains being basic C4D landscape primitives. The wall and enterance were made first with everything else being modelled and created around it.

The character was a C4D sculpt clothed in MD. I'm a generalist but specialise in environments so I do wish i can go back in a couple years and revamp this with fresh skills, but for now this is my best project to date showcasing hard surface modelling, organic modelling, layout and compositing. The goal of this environment was to show off the massive enterance to Quhixzenour, a tomb of a great leader, roaming distant continents thousands of years ago.

The grading and colour correction as well as camera motion can do with a lot of improvement, optimising this scene to the best of my abilities was still giving me a lot of errors and problems so it was a matter of adding as much as i could whilst keeping the entire file stable enough to leave to render overnight.

Silent Summits: Lost in the Tempest

Silent Summits: Lost in the Tempest

The enigmatic North Pole serves as a mystical backdrop where Santa Claus is not just a figure of folklore but a guardian of ancient secrets hidden within the icy expanse. When a catastrophic storm threatens to unravel the balance of nature, Santa's magical prowess becomes crucial in quelling the storm. Iris seeks Santa's guidance by discovering a connection between her powers and the storm's origin. Together, they embark on a dangerous expedition through treacherous landscapes, delving into the heart of the Silent Summits to unravel the mysteries that could either save or doom their world.

First environment of the year in Cinema 4D, was a great project and allowed me to explore a lot of new techniques and ways to go about creating realistic ecology scattering and layout. This was also made to be as realistic as possible, i was a bit less confident in my skills here so i masked a lot of that with fog and overcast lighting. Trees made in speedtree and debri from quixel.
