A compilation of projects I worked on during my first and second year at ESMA.

1st year project

Shoe project:

For this project, we were asked to create a realistic shoe starting from the modeling on Maya, to then creating the lighting and Look Development using Affinity and Maya Renderman to get realistic textures.

I chose to model and texture the Air Jordan 5 Aquas shoes. This was a fun project because I got to experiment with adding imperfections and signs of wear and tear to create something more believable and interesting.

2nd year projects

Loop:

The goal for this project was to discover the workflow and pipeline to creating an animated sequence, from the creation of a concept, to the rendering and compositing of the sequence.

We were asked to each, come up with an idea to create a room. Then we had to animate a robot character, which was given to us, entering  from the left of the frame and exiting the room at the right in a simple walk cycle.

For my room, I was inspired by stop motion movies such as Coraline and ParaNorman  ( you can try to find some Easter eggs in the images below), which is why I tried to create  crooked modeling, and out of proportion elements  to recreate the effect seen in those movies. I chose to create a dirty, abandoned toilet room.

For the texturing,  my favorite part was using pixar's Renderman, combining noise maps and presence for the creation of old cracked paint on the walls and debris. I also used Substance Painter to add certain details such as dust in the corners of different objects.

I'm responsible for all aspects of the creation of the room and compositing and character animation.

Here are a few breakdowns:

Fur project:

For this project we had to choose an animal for our first school groom project, working with xgen interactive groom on Maya.

I chose the Red squirrel animal for my project, but I decided to add a twist, to make it more interesting, and was inspired by different felines such as cats and lions to create longer fur on the original animal. I used multiple references to observe how their fur clumps and behaves and to help me decide how to best shape the fur on my animal.

After sculpting the squirrel in zbrush, it was time to retopologize and extract the displacement map before getting into the groom.

The textures were painted with Substance Painter and rendering done with Renderman. Here are a few renders and breakdowns below.

Although I would still like to improve a few aspects of this project,  overall it was a fun project which allowed me to experiment with grooming, and which taught me a lot.

I look forward to working on more grooming, among other, projects in the future and further improving.

Thank you for reading, see you next time!
