Thomas Millcamps - 3d Generalist
Here are some of my projects made during my 3rd year at ARTFX.
THE IRON GIANTS
The Iron Giant is a personal project that took me two months to complete. It is my first finished project, fully done using only Maya for the modeling, which is a big change as I am more used to Blender. In the end, the model was more optimized than my previous works in Blender and allowed me to learn the basics of hard surface modeling. All objects are separate to allow for a quick rig by using only parent constraints to pose the character.
For reference, I only use the concept from the movie art book but aim for a more realistic result as I felt the cartoon proportion wouldn't fit for this model.
The texturing part was very straight-forward; I used mostly the curvature and ambient occlusion maps to mask areas for dirt and scratches.
NEBULA
Originally, I wanted to do this project in Houdini as a way to learn the software, but I quickly realized I definitely underestimated the compute power required for this type of work. But in my research I found a tool call IFS render : a fractal generator.
After some time going through the documentation and a few tries:
I was able to render a final image and also a video, but as you can see, the lighting is changing a lot because. It's a software limitation since its gpu base it is possible to render High quality exr that can be used in other software.
DRAGON CONCEPT
This Dragon project is one of my biggest Zbrush projects this year, the concept was made from scratch using zsphere. All was done in Zbrush, as I didn't plan to animate or texture the character. However, because of the quickly made topology, I did run into some issues, as you can see on the face close up (inflate scales on the neck), when applying the displacement map for rendering. But I was able to deal with it by tuning the displacement parameter.

The concept is from one of my favorite illustrator : AlbaBG
