Hello! I'm JaeYoon Ko, studying visual effects and computer graphic.
I’m so excited to present some of my recent projects. I made two projects, "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" and "Silent Coin Laundromat". I handled everything by myself from modeling, texturing, look development, lighting, to post-production.
Thank you for watching my projects! I hope you're interested.
Project 1
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
This is a scene from the amazing animation "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" released in 2018. I recreated it with three different lighting concepts (Daytime, Night, Sunset) and connected them using a time-lapse technique.
I created the main buildings and structures model, then proceeded with texturing and look development. I also added animation in a stop-motion style because I thought it would match well with the time-lapse representation of the changing times of day.
Light Trails
At the beginning of the video, I depicted the trails of fast-moving cars as light trails. I thought this element would also go well with the time-lapse.
While it was a cool effect, it was also the most challenging part at the same time. There were two main difficulties:
1. I had to create animations for the models to appear at the right timing.
2. Each light trail needed to disappear at different timings and speeds.
So, I first created the models by making curves and adjusting the length of the models with keyframes. Then, to make them disappear at the right times, I applied individual materials to each light trail and added keys to visibility, intensity, and reflection. It was a little bit complicated, but it definitely upgraded my skills.
Project 2.
Silent Coin Laundromat
I created a quiet American coin laundromat. I designed 3 different lighting concepts and made 2 shots for each concept, a total of 6 shots. The lighting concepts for each time of day are as follows:
Sunset: cozy & warm / Neon: funky & colorful / Dawn: silent & dark
Interior Design and Modeling
First, I researched many real coin laundromats in the United States as references to design the interior layout and texture the props. As a result, I created a coin laundromat with a 1.5-floor structure and a simple lounge area where people can relax.
Texturing and Look Development
This was the most challenging part of the project. Since it was a small interior space, detailed texturing and look development were important - such as the warped ceiling tiles, peeled painted or scratched chair surface. I referred to a lot of real photo references to achieve this.
Rendering & Post Production
I used the V-Ray renderer. By utilizing various render elements and separating the lights with light selects for detailed adjustments, I was able to create the desired moods (cozy, funky, silent) for each lighting concept.
Thank you for watching my projects and the work process!
