Time Traveler's Study is a real-time environment created in Unreal Engine 5 for the Game Development Studio class at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). It was created over the course of ten weeks. I also later took an additional three weeks to create lighting variations.

Original Version

Lighting Variations

For a real-time lighting class I took this past quarter, I decided to breathe some new life into this environment. I made changes to the scale of the room - moved in and shortened the walls to create a more intimate feeling. Most importantly, I re-lit the environment with the knowledge I gained throughout this class. In my real-time lighting class, we not only learned about how to use the technology but also about art direction and lighting for physical accuracy. While we used Unreal Engine 5 in this class, we focused on it as a tool not for game development, but for virtual production. Because of this, it was of utmost importance that our lighting be physically accurate- so that it would stand up to use as a virtual set for real actors.

While the original version of my environment uses baked lighting with GPU Lightmass, the alternate versions use fully dynamic lighting with Lumen. Though I think the day where Lumen will be a standard in games is still far off, I think that familiarizing myself with both technologies was both useful and enlightening.
