My Motion Graphics Journey with Nanyang Poly

Justyn Tan Yu Xuan
by JustynTan on 1 Jun 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

These are the projects I created during my 3 years at Nanyang Polytechnic, where I developed my technical skills ranging from 2D animation in After Effects to 3D modeling in Cinema 4D.

Drinks In Motion [ Grain SG ]

This pro-bono project was undertaken during my final year of polytechnic. Our task was to find a company and create a 30-second motion graphic video or product animation for them. Eager to enhance my skills in showcasing organic ingredients, I decided to learn RealFlow and Particle Simulator to incorporate realistic liquid and particle effects into the animation.

I created nine different animation sequences for their nine unique drinks. While some ingredients were straightforward to model, items like coffee beans and leaves posed significant challenges in both modeling and texturing.

Rendering was another demanding aspect, as the animation cache was extremely file-intensive. There were times I had to leave renders running overnight to meet deadlines for consultations.

Despite the challenge of mastering these new tools within a two-month timeframe, I am proud of the final product. It has become one of my favorite animations, and the positive feedback from the clients [ GRAIN SG ] has been incredibly rewarding.

An Apple Watch Animation

This was a course project to train our technical skills more. I wanted to try doing my version of an apple watch animation as in the online space there has been very little animations on the apple watch. As I continued the production, there was alot of difficulties I had to face. Modeling was difficult as the product shape was too sophisticated and smooth, Material and texturizing was hard to get the right look and having the product to look good in certain frames to have the wow factor. While this was one of my hardest projects, I am happy that this was the project that pushed me to learn more technical skills to improve.

A Lunar Rabbit's Rescue

This was a 2d Chinese New Year Nanyang Polytechnic Course Project to showcase the arrival of a new year of the rabbit [Chinese Zodiac] to submit for the MGACHINA competition.
This was one of my favorite 2d projects as I learned how to do stop motion animation with the rabbit and puppet pin. This was the first 2d motion graphic animation I did, it was not easy to make as I had no idea what I was doing. I had to plan alot on the story board to ensure a story I liked and was easy for me to visualize. This thought me the importance of storyboarding and planning before production as both are as important. Although I didn't win the Chinese Zodiac Dragon Motion Graphic Award. I was amazed and proud of producing this animation for my first 2d motion graphic animation.

Somnambulate [Movie Title Sequence]

This was a opening sequence project undertaken during my coursework. Instead of using a statue alone to tell the story, I showcased environments to enhance the narrative. Inspired by the "Russian Sleep Experiment," my twist involved prisoners of war turning into mystical creatures and attacking scientists.

Aiming for a cold, dark vibe, I featured a forest on fire, a dungeon, and a person dying in a science testing room. I used Cinema 4D and learned new techniques like Pyro Simulation for realistic fire effects. This involved extensive trial and error, particularly in refining lighting and remodeling sculptures to depict prisoners being dragged.

Rendering was challenging due to heavy pyro simulations, resulting in long render times and color inconsistencies. These issues required multiple re-renders during the crunch period. Despite initial doubts about my creativity, this project helped me grow significantly in skills like lighting and pyro simulations.

D11 Maker's Workshop [ Design Orchard ]

This was our cohourt's first group project for the course, collaborating with DESIGN ORCHARD. Over four months, I delved into the basics of Cinema 4D and Redshift, evolving from designing basic sprite characters to modeling complex organic assets like shirts and industrial equipment. The project's core objective was to highlight DESIGN ORCHARD's theme, "MADE WITH PASSION." Our animations needed to capture the entire process of their products, from raw materials and sewing equipment to the finished items available in their stores.

Throughout the interactions with the clients,  I learned to refined our communication skills, learning to articulate our ideas more effectively and gaining invaluable insights into the design industry. This project not only honed my technical skills but also enhanced our understanding of professional collaboration and client relations.

After the end of the project, they were happy to showcase the work on the front of their LED board which felt nice as it was the first time to see the fruits of my labor come to fruition and results.
