Round of applause for our sponsors

Hi, I'm Emillia, 20 years old and I'm from Germany. I'm excited to share my projects  with you.

The male mermaid

I had never modeled such a detailed character before. It was also the first time I had worked with SSS.

The concept

I discovered Grafit Studio on Artstation and found this concept. It looked very interesting to model and texture, so I chose it as my first project.

References

Before I started the project, I collected references.

Modeling

I modeled the base mesh in Zbrush and did the retopology and uvs in Maya. I went back to Zbrush to add details. For the scales on his tail I created an alpha.

Posing

I usually use Zbrush to pose my characters, but this method caused some problems with his fins. So I decided to rig and skin him in Maya.

Texturing

I textured the character in Mari. At that time I was more familiar with Substance Painter, so I textured the plants in Substance Painter to save time. I knew beforehand that I wanted to spend more time on the character. I used metalness to create an effect on the shoulders that you often find on sharks. I tried different methods, but adding metalness worked best for me.

Master Chef

For my second project, I wanted to a stylized character. I found Saeed Jalabi's page on Artstation and immediately fell in love with his concepts. I chose her as my second project because I love her attitude, the color and the shapes.

The concept

References

I also collected a few references for her.

Modeling

For this project, I also modeled the base mesh in Zbrush. I did the retopology and uvs in Maya. I added some details to her face in Zbrush. I created the base for the clothing in Marvelouse Designer and modified them in Zbrush and added some folds.

Texturing

I textured her in Mari. I started to blockout the base color and added some breakup later. I used Substance Painter to bake a thickness map, which I later used for the subsurface weight.

Posing

I used Zbrush to pose her.

Groom

I did her lashes in Houdini. It's been a while since I last did a groom, so I was excited.

Conclusion

I have learned a lot in the last 5 months that I have been working on my projects. There are still parts that I would like to improve. But at the moment I'm very happy with what I've achieved so far. Thank you for checking out my projects and my breakdowns, I appreciate any feedback.
