Character Illustration

Will Ferro
by TimeGear on 31 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

I've always loved focusing in on character art and design, and want to use my skill set to one day display my own characters in tandem with stories of my own creation. My entry here aims to display some of the multiple ways over the last few years in which I've tied character art directly into storytelling.

"No Recollection"
One product of an open assignment in my most recent illustration class, No Recollection was my pitch for a larger story that would tie creative writing with illustration currently titled Dream Journeys.

This picture depicts the protagonist first waking up in the opening scene after suffering amnesia, and the premise would be that he'll search for lost journal entries that can tell him who he once was. The project would be broken into long chapters/short stories, with each having 1-2 illustrations of major scenes, as well as one of those journal entries at the end that details more thematically relevant world building.

"Jim Henson Portrait"

Another piece created for an illustration class, this time being a portrait depicting Jim Henson.

While, at a glance, it may seem to more represent his work on the Muppets, the illustration is still a portrait at heart, bearing his profile in the brush of the swamp.

"Delia Meadowbreeze"

This illustration is of Delia, my own original character. She was used in a tabletop game played with friends, and now we have plans of retelling that story in the form of a comic series.

This specific illustration is meant to serve as key art for the character to be used in promotional material, as well as reference art for the character internally. The project is still in incredibly early stages, but this illustration is intended to be part of a set that will include the other protagonist characters, and of the four needed in the end this is one of two currently completed.

"Magic Burger"

Another project created in school, the premise of which being to design mascot characters for a hypothetical fast food brand based on the menu items, then illustrate the characters in a way that would lend itself to being a page-sized magazine advert.

Taking a fantasy spin on the advertising, Magic Burger sports a party of battle-hungry adventurers on a quest for fine dining. The illustration was created for the express purpose of being a magazine advertisement, but was also drawn in a way such that it could be used as a standalone poster as well, either hanging in the establishment itself or being sold as merchandise.

"Bird in NY"

One more assignment from a previous illustration class from my time at Ringling, Birds in NY was created to be the image that accompanies a news article.

The article in question focused on how light pollution in New York City was having negative effects on the bird population of the local area, and how an effort was being made to turn lights off at night to help them fly safely. Another notable detail of the assignment was that it was designed to be completed with a much quicker turnover, meaning it was completed in roughly half the time of other projects.
