Lost in Motherhood

by FeiG on 31 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

This project is a personal assignment I completed at SCAD, combining 2D and 3D design. It explores the connection between motherhood, nature, and fashion, with the main elements being knots and braiding, symbolizing the bond between mother and child.

LOST IN MOTHERHOOD

This project is about mothers' stories. My inspiration came from a news story about a mother holding her sick child and praying to the deities. This served as the starting point for my research process.

My muse is the Spanish photographer and artist Carlota Guerrero, whose work revolves around themes of femininity. Her exploration of the connection between mothers and deities greatly inspired me. The braid, symbolizing the umbilical cord, represents the bond between mother and child. Therefore, I used ropes, fabric strips, and felt to create various knots, which serve as key elements in this series of designs. Additionally, nature itself signifies motherhood, so I chose natural scenes, with the concept of the Tree of Life particularly resonating with the idea of mothers nurturing life.

Based on the research process mentioned above, I used Midjourney to generate textured patterns and natural background images.

After finalizing the initial designs, I created 3D effects for four looks using CLO 3D software. I experimented with lighting and backgrounds and considered details such as hairstyles, makeup, accessories, and shoes. The most challenging parts were tying the fabric knots, adjusting the lace positions, and fixing the eyelets' placements, but fortunately, I managed to complete them successfully. Finally, I rendered the video and continuously made adjustments.
