Procedural web tool and render

by YankoVdv on 31 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

This is a presentation about a procedural tool I made for a 3d render about spiderman. As you can imagine, I had to make webs. This tool allowed me to quickly make iterations on the webs so that I could achieve the best looking render in the end.

PROCEDURAL WEB TOOL AND 3D RENDER

I am proud to present a procedural web tool I made with houdini. I was working on an assignment for school that had to have webs in a 3d scene. I decided to make it a procedural tool in order to be able to iterate very quickly between different placements and shapes of the webs. This tool takes in a line and/or a shape and uses it to make the webs. The user can then change the thickness, the amount of webs, the shape of the webs, the density ...

The tool also automatically unwraps the web. That way the user can just quickly make variations and texture them in a matter of seconds.

Here are some examples of what the tool can output

I then used this tool in a render that was inspired by a mix of spiderman and the painting "Vase Of Flowers" by Ambrosius Bosschaert. The idea was to use the lighting and composition of the painting, and to use objects/props of the spiderman movies. This tool then allowed me to quickly make iterations of the webs in the painting.

Here is what my process looked like. I started out with a blockout, changed the compotion and started working on the objects in the scene, and then I polished it up for the final delivery. As you can see the webs changed when it comes to placement and thickness, this was very easy to do with the help of the procedural web tool.

Thank you very much for reading through this article, I hope you enjoyed it and maybe even learned something new. If you are interested in seeing more of my work or contacting me, you can find me here :
