"Spirit Lights" is the name of my project I have been working on for the last nine months in my final year at Universal Arts School. It is a personal project based on the folklore of the Black Forest and german traditions and myths. The main art inspiration has been SPA Studio's film 'Klaus'.
Thumbnail Exploration
First, I explored the enviroment and language of the project with some thumbnails. It is set in a village in the Black Forest surouned by cursed land and enchanted creatures. The story is set in winter time, so snowy landscape is the main theme.
Prop Design
With the traditional arquitecture of the area in mind, I started to design the exterior and interior props. It tries to recreat the Half-Timbered House style seen in medieval germany while including some elements that would reflect the magical nature of the story.
Character Design
Once the foundations of the world design were finished, I started to think about the characters that would live there and so the two main personas came to life.
First, we have our young inventor named Ricmod. Trying to keep the traditional attire in mind, we have a slightly more practical twist to it as to accommodate his need for exploration.
My second character is our local apothecary aprentice, Herleva. More so called the local witch, due to her tendency to tap into the old magic of the land and worship of the forest spirits. One day she would be the one to be in charge to perform the anual ritual that keeps the balance of the veil.
Key Shots
Finally, with these backgrounds, I wanted to explore different settings that could exist within the story. Like our witch shop and the village if one day spring would come to pass.
