Project Overview

This is a short film that we worked on for our examination project at Visual Magic. We had 6 weeks to work on the project, which proved to be very challenging to finish in time.  The story is about a Porcelain doll that discovers a new environment but finds that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

Room and Character (Olivia Vesterberg)

I wanted to make a fun doll house inspired room that goes from being monochrome and  "boring" to colorful when she leaves. The room being monochrome in the beginning is supposed to represent how she views her surroundings, how it has lost its colors because of her circumstances.

We bought the character online which I then retextured to fit the doll like fun aesthetic.

Mocap Animation (Robin Andersson Vestlund)

I wanted to use our examination project to get a better understanding of motion capture animation, the original idea was to use iClone and CC4 for refine the animation after I cleaned it up in QTM, but my inexperience with both programs led to various problems. I decided later on to do everything in Motionbuilder instead, a program I've had more experience in during my time here on Visual Magic.

This time around we made use of the Manus motion capture gloves to capture the finger movements, which were interesting to work with, though i wish more documentation on how to combine the body mocap and manus gloves existed online.

Winter Environment (Agnes Boström)

I started with creating foliage in Speedtree which I have a little experience with.

After working in Houdini in some classes I wanted to learn more about the software. I created snow and made some simulations like wind, footprints in the snow and some falling snowflakes.

In Conclusion

We thought it was a fun project though stressful and we have learnt a lot during the process.

Special thanks to Thomas Nylund for creating the music!

Thank you
