Enhancing Airport Navigation for Neurodivergent Travelers

Increasingly complex airport navigation and rising travel demands are causing growing frustration, especially for neurodivergent individuals who experience cognitive overload. Ambiguous signage and poor accessibility lead to heightened stress and confusion. This issue is prevalent in large airports, where unclear directions and overwhelming environments make it difficult for neurodivergent travelers to find their way and manage their journey. More inclusive and clearly marked pathways are needed to ensure a smoother travel experience for all passengers.

Shared Struggles: Primary Research

To identify the struggles of travelers, how they feel at the airport, what would make the experience easy and where do they feel the most sensory issues, our team conducted two weeks of research. Through surveys interviews and cultural probes with travelers and airport staff we discovered that travelers find navigating airports challenging due to ambiguous directional signage, accessibility barriers, and cognitive/sensory overload.

Travel Stress Free: Our Vision

Waypoint is a three-part re-imagination of the airport experience. Waypoint empowers individuals by guiding them to their points of interest, removing mental and physical stressors, and simplifying the travel experience.

How might we create an unburdened airport experience that is more efficient, accessible, and enjoyable for travelers?

User Testing: Concept Validation

We conducted three rounds of user testing. The first round identified areas of difficulty in our prototype, elements causing confusion, features that users liked and animations that they loved. Based on this feedback, we made several adjustments to our app. The next round was successful but users still found a few features to be unnecessary or to be given way too much importance. So, for the final round we developed the features and prototypes on the based of importance and requirement, with users finding the prototype intuitive and natural to use.

Waypoint is a navigation app transforming airport travel by guiding travelers to points of interest, reducing stress, and simplifying navigation. Launching with major airports, it offers detailed wayfinding. Future expansion includes other crowded spaces to enhance accessibility. Prioritizing user-friendly development and strategic partnerships, Waypoint revolutionizes navigation in complex environments.
