by frozenamby on 31 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Hi! I'm Amber, and I'm aspiring to work as a concept artist, illustrator or comic/webtoon artist. I don't have a full project to show you, but I still wanted to put in an entry so I've amassed some of my uni work from the past couple of months into a post that is hopefully interesting or helpful to someone! Thankyou!

Hello!

Below you will find some of my work over the last few months split into 3 projects, each with progress views or plans with references. Enjoy!

Project one - Seven deadly sins inspired environments.

Below are the processes, and final pieces, of my part of a larger project I completed between Novermber 2023 and January 2024. I did environments, and my classmates did characters or props to the same theme.

I'm really proud of my designs and their unique, bright and colourful concepts! References, notes from myself and my groupmates and other points are all listed on the work-in-progress images before the final pieces for each environment.

The order of the rings of Hell are decided based on how 'bad' that sin is, the order my team and I decided on was based mainly on various religious sources, and goes as follows: Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Sloth, Envy and finally, Pride.

First up is the city of Lust, the highest ring of Hell!

[1] Lust City -

[2] Gluttony Alley -

[3] Greed High Street -

[4] Mountains of Wrath -

[5] Sloth Offices -

[6] Envy Underpass -

[7] Spires of Pride -

Extras -

There was some extra stuff that my friends and I came up with from a narrative sense didn't get illustrated, such as how the legal system and transport would work in Hell.

We thought you'd need passports or special access, perhaps granted through 'good behaviour', to traverse between rings.

We also thought each ring of Hell would have it's own transport, for example Lust, being the highest and largest city, would have all kinds of transport available, whereas Gluttony and Greed would have trams, due to their density. Wrath would probably operate around poorly maintained bus services, and a main railway route or coach system out of the town. Sloth, being mostly vertical, would be limited to travellators, lifts and endless staircases. Envy, being waterlogged, probably would use small boats, and on the land use small, singular use methods such as bikes and scooters. Pride, being in a frozen lake and confined to a single massive building complex, would be limited to a singular ski-lift in and out and the cavern it is in.

Regardless, I had a lot of fun with this environment project, as I usually stick to characters. These were not fully rendered environments like the projects you'll see below, but I really enjoy their concepts and colour stories.

Project two - Serene isometric game art-style environment concept.

This was a fun project exploring an isometric perspective. I used this technique to make sort of like a 'kit' of 2D pieces or assets I can reuse around the piece. An example of like pillars, windows, plants such as the dandelions, etc. This project was a lot of fun, and I love the outcome!

Project three - Ancient ruins portfolio piece.

Here is, what I believe to be, my strongest piece of concept art yet from a technical sense. I aimed to create a standout portfolio piece as my final artifact for my last unit of year 2 in uni. The process, including a timelapse video and parallaxed animation are all below!

Thankyou for looking at my work!

This was just a combination of some things I've worked on this year. Next year if I enter The Rookies, I would like to have a full singular project with lots of detail and concept art.

Despite that, if you did like some of my work, you can find me on Artstation and Instagram under the online alias/handle '@frozenamby'.
