Hi, I'm Liam and I'm an aspiring Environment concept artist and character designer. This is my concept art portfolio for the Rookie Awards 2024. I'm quite pumped to enter this contest again and show my stuff. This shows the different projects that I did since my last entry. Some awe-inspiring and some weird.

Character Design

Character design was my first love in digital art. The characters I design are from animation, games and movies that I love. Some of them good and some of them weird.

Concept Art

It's something that I accidentally fell in  love in because I get to create stuff that I am passionate about and I get to improve my skills through it.

Qwerky Quokka Courier Concept

'Roaming the plains happy to do its job'

I was inspired by the game Dota 2 because it has a lot of interesting courier concepts. I wanted something that is iconic to Australia so I decided it would be the smiling Quokka. I concepted it in Photoshop and sculpted it in Zbrush.

Starfish Tavern

'Below the harsh waves of the sea is a place of comfort and merry. Grab a pint of beer and a place to stay overnight after a long journey.'

My first year work at CDW studios where we are tasked to design a concept for a building underwater. I used Zbrush for the 3D base and painted over it in Photoshop

Colony - A2873

'It's 1 of 3 colonies on the planet A287. Built on top of ruins of a once advanced civilization, now desecrated and turned into a hub for merchants. . It is known for its underground market dealings that go under the nose of the galactic authorities so lots of scrappers, salvagers, and rebels frequent the colony. If you're thinking of visiting be sure to have something on hand that can be bargained'

I always liked space and what space life is like and recent sci fi movies really opened my eyes of what the possibilities could be. It was really fun doing the project using 3D as a base in order to do the paintings.

For the Light

'The empire of Intiaco and its people are on the brink of destruction from an ancient evil, that was long thought forgotten, now unleashed into the world. A warrior of the sun must stop the spread of corruption and return peace to the empire.'

This is a personal project of mine. It's a concept of a rogue-like game in the style similar to Journey. I always wanted to design characters in 3D but it's a challenge as of yet. It was fun building this world and the things that walk in it.

Scrap Punk Alley Environment Concept

'It's rusty. Different colours. Different parts. But it's home to some.'

I was inspired by Ian Mcque's artwork of harbours and rusty makeshift ships in the air. I wanted to visualize the rustle and bustle of a world made of salvaged junk fully in 3D. I've never done a fully 3D scene before so it was really fun doing it in Blender. Most of the 3D models I made myself but also used some downloaded assets to fill the scene.

Illustration

These are more of my expressive pieces which are an insight to what I was thinking at the time and what I was inspired by.

Late Night Project

'Sometimes when ideas come, pulling an all-nighter is worth it'

Technical Drawing exercises

This are my work that I've done from school that tested my knowledge of the fundamentals of art.

P-38 Lightning

Drawing a plane in 2D was very challenging especially getting the perspective of the major shapes first was very important to getting the rest of the details right.

Tachikoma

It's a fun assignment because it was chance to do a bit of scifi stuff.
