Characters, Environments & Artstyles

Marc Keller Muñoz
by marcalamente on 31 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

This is a collection of the works I did while studying at University of Applied Sciences Mainz. I love stylized and painterly NPR - Animation and experimenting how an artstyle supports and enhances the story.

The Secret Recipe Keeper

"The Keeper of Secret Cooking Recipes, with a wise glimmer in her aged eyes as she ponders the delicacies she could make with that lobster mushroom."

"She wears a special device that contains the scroll of secret recipes, and the glass knob at the end functions as a magnifying glass to read the practically microscopic script with."

- Concept by Kelly Robertson

I did this wondeful old lady in my third semester to learn more anout the workflow of charactercreation and to dive deeper into the style of arcane. By handpainting the textures completely and using AOVs to light her in Nuke I was able to achieve a graphic, stylistic look. The background was then painted in photoshop to make it feel even more like a 2D Illustration.

Software used: Zbrush, Maya, Blender, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, Nuke, Phototshop.

Aleria, the solarpunk girl

"casually taking a stroll through the abandoned factory, scavenging for old tech to be repurposed."

I had this idea of a solarpunk gardener/scavenger, so I worked together with a designer to bring her to life. She is heavily influenced by mediterrean/spanish culture and a love letter to my homecountry. With this project, I wanted to further push the boundaries between 3D Animation and 2D Illustration. I learned 3DCoat to handpaint all her textures, aswell as using photoshop and projection mapping to make the background, so I can achieve this very stylized 2D-painterly style, which is inspired from paintings by background artists and Arcane. The biggest challenge so far was making this anatomically more realistic character, I also had to keep the professional production pipeline in mind. My goal is to make a small shortfilm, so keep tuned for more in the future!

Characteranimation from Mixamo.

Characterdesign by Joey Schach.

Software used: Zbrush, Maya, Blender, 3DCoat, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, Nuke, Phototshop.

Otterfolk

"the giant evil mushroom that used to live in this forest is gone, right?!"

This character made me jump straight into the world of character creation in 3D. We were tasked to use a existing concept and translate it into 3D. The Process was sometimes chaotic because I used a lot of these softwares for the first time and the workflows are complicated, but it's amazing how much I learned in only that semester. Later I added the forest and mushroom and used the opportunity to learn substance designer/sampler for the trees and mushroom.

Random stuff I did over the years

these were mostly for challenges and I used Blender, Marvelous and After effects for them. I was especially interested in trying different styles, from anime to watercolor look.

Thank you!
