Tom & Jerry - Orchestra conductors

by GiorgiaValenti on 31 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Hi everyone! I am Giorgia Valenti, a student with an animation major. In this post, I will tell you about my third-year project at Side Academy: Tom & Jerry, Orchestra conductors. I want to share with you information about how I made the final product thanks to my tutors who followed me during the course.

Tom & Jerry - Orchestra conductors

This project was originated with the idea of wanting to be an animation exercise. I chose a scene from Tom & Jerry given it is full of cute and articulate animation.

I started this work by carefully researching the scene, then played it back myself to get refercences on the movements. Next I set up blocking of the scene and once the tutors approved it I then went to spline.

Once the application was finished I tackled the lighiting and lookdev phase.

Thanks for taking a look, I hope you enjoyed the project!

Below are the various stages of project development:

1- References

Before starting the animation, I looked for a Tom and Jerry scene that was interesting from a movement standpoint.

Once I found it I moved on to identify the key-poses of both characters. This is a key part because the more accurate it is the easier it is to animate later.

I then reproduced Tom and Jerry's movements, trying to empathize with them as best I could to understand the movements in their entirety.

2- Blocking

Next I started the animation by referring to the key-poses.

3- Spline

The transition into spline was a lot of fun because I had to clean up all the steps of the various actions. After an initial cleanup I started to fix the details, get the timing right, and above all I tried to give some character to the characters.

4- Lighting

At this point I created a small enviroment by adding props, this is because I decided to place the scene in a theater and not outside as in the initial reference.

Next I studied the lighting a little bit to try to give an effect of theatricality.

5- Look dev and Final result

In the last phase of the project, I switched from maya to Nuke to do a little color correction and also to fix a problem with Jerry's shadow.

At this point the project is finished.

Finally, I would like to thank Side Academy and my mentors Giada Busnardo and Alessandro Tommasi for supporting me and giving the best advice.

And thanks also to you for following me so far!
