My New3dge Portfolio 2024

by marcmagliari on 31 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

As the year comes to a close, I'm glad to be able to showcase my progress and growing pains in this second and last year of learning here at New3dge Concept Art. Good scrolling !

Round of applause for our sponsors

In the last two months of school, we embarked on our first long-term personal project. Bradamante is a worldbuilding homage to my cultural background and the stories that inspired me to start drawing, taking place on the coasts of Italy and Spain and putting a fun spin on very classical fairytale tropes.

Props to Kevin Zamir Goeke , huge professional inspiration and all in all fun guy who helped and guided me through the ups and down of this last adventure !

Harmonic was the group project we worked on at the start of the school year, in tandem with the VFX and Game Art teams. My main task was to develop the starting zone of the game, through 3d layouts, paintings and keyframes.

As we moved towards production I also was able to take on a short character task. It was a challenging experience overall, that required me to learn how to work with others, fit another artistic direction, respect deadlines and step into a very hybrid position, depending on the team's needs. Here's a few artworks !

Many thanks to Ulysse Verhasselt for the spot on artistic direction and AurĂ©lien Fournier for the supervision. Big  hugs to all my teammates who stringed along for the ride XD

Galactic Aleph

For this character specific class I had to imagine two rulers of opposing factions in a dystopic future. Loosely inspired by a short story of Jorge Luis Borges, here are Elsbeth and Io-tan. One is a despotic and immortal galactic conqueror, the other a proud warrior prince ready to defend his home planet. Both very badass

Thanks to Oscar Romer for the constant professional and actionable feedback, helping me further my understanding of character design

Free Bird

So the last week before Christmas with Jort van Welbergen was all about design a sci-fi vehicle and putting it in a dynamic keyframe. I imagined a future where people who could afford it would live near a black hole in order never to age, and seek whatever thrills they can in this infinite vacation by enjoying extremely dangerous sports. So here is the "free bird" , a ship powdered by solar sails using the radiation of the black hole to travel incredible distances ! Until the circuits go in overdrive and catastrophe follows of course.

Stylized Space Opera

Inspired by games such as Deathloop, this little part of my portfolio explores a very 70's version of sci-fi; through both characters, environments and props.

miscellaneous character practice

some shorter character and creature projects from the start of the year

Painting practice

Outside of concept specific tasks, I love doing more personal and narrative pieces. Paris is full of museums full to the brim of amazing paintings, and often enjoy bringing their flatter perspectives and symbolic feel to my illustrations

I can't stress enough how grateful I am for the amazing network of support that surrounded me through these two years. Thank to all of my teachers and classmates for making me grow, and thanks to the alumni for all the help and kind words of encouragement.

Lastly thanks everyone for checking my work, hope it was worth the scroll and see you soon for new stuff !
