Typography

Contemporary Cross Cultural Art Show

The Ilham Gallery in Kuala Lumpur is hosting the Contemporary Cross Cultural Art Show, which aims to highlight modern Southeast Asian art and the fusion of Malaysian and Indonesian cultures in contemporary art, giving locals and visitors an opportunity to understand their cultural integration.

Design Rationale
The characteristic of this event is to blend modernity and daring creativity with traditional basket weaving elements. To make a strong impression on the audience, four weaving patterns are featured throughout the whole identity. 


The poster comes alive through animation that echoes the rhythmic process of basket weaving. Each movement within the animation showcases the act of weaving strands together, highlighting the essence of this traditional art.

Collaterals

In all the designs, the layout draws inspiration directly from the art of weaving, further reinforcing the cultural significance of this fusion.

Corporate Identity

Hamachidori Kendo Dojo

Hamachidori Kendo Dojo is a dojo located in Kuala Lumpur, offering 3 kinds of Japanese martial arts, namely, Kendo, Iaido and Tankendo, which can improve physical and mental health as well as self-improvement. However, their current identity does not show the essence and values of  a dojo.

Objective
• To reposition them as a brand that not only preserves and upholds the traditions and values of Kendo but also stays relevant and appealing to the young generations
• To change the perception of Kendo, Iaido, and Tankendo as outdated sports by raising accessibility and awareness

Brand Direction
A harmonious blend of Japanese martial arts’ traditions and discipline, infused with a modern essence of simplicity and peace.

Three lines are featured, each representing the distinct swords used in the martial arts of Kendo, Tankendo and Iaido. The convergence of these lines signifies the harmonious unity of mind and body, reflecting the essence shared by these three martial arts.

Dojo

The Hamachidori Kendo Dojo is situated in Kuala Lumpur, with its exterior located on the second and third floors of the building. The dojo is designed to have a contemporary design with a Japanese minimalist aesthetic, featuring a combination of wooden battens and cream concrete. Brand mnemonic adorn the wooden battens, enhancing the dojo’s brand identity.

The main logo sign is strategically placed at the center of the wall to effectively communicate with the audience even from a far distance.

The philosophy wall is dedicated to capturing the essence of these martial arts by inscribing their fundamental values and aspirations onto cloth.

Photo Display Wall

The photo display wall showcases and commemorates the diverse activities in which the practitioners have participated, offering viewers insights into the rich and multifaceted world of Japanese martial arts.

These posters are designed with a composed yet professional ambiance that embodies the essence of Hamachidori and complemented by compelling copywriting.

The design aims to evoke a sense of calm and discipline, seamlessly integrating the brand’s colors and brand mnemonics.

Event: Kendo Workshop

Hamachidori Kendo Dojo and the Malaysia Kendo Association are hosting a Kendo Workshop to promote the practice and cultural importance of this martial art. The workshop will feature talks and hands-on sessions with renowned Japanese instructors.

This poster is intended for placement in schools, aimed at creating awareness among youngsters.

Beyond posters, the event will be promoted on Instagram by providing workshop information.

Conversation with Gods, Wu Bai Wu Bo Bi ; 与神对话 ,有拜有保佑

Design Rationale
Chinese worshipping practices hold deep cultural significance, particularly in southern regions. However, the younger generation lacks understanding of this tradition. This book series aims to bridge that gap by fostering both awareness and practical knowledge.

Overall, the design utilizes a combination of infographics and attractive illustrations for a visually engaging experience.The color scheme incorporates a mix of pink and yellow, drawing inspiration from the colors of joss paper which adds a touch of cultural relevance.

Target Audience
1.Younger generation might be interested in their cultural heritage but lack a strong understanding of traditional worshipping practices.
2.People who are new to this culture and curious about this cultural heritage

The Packaging 

The packaging of the books feature a hand gesture that symbolizes the act of worship to showcase the characteristics of worshiping.Additionally, a bookmark will be included as a collateral, prominently placed at the center of the packaging for easy access.

Book 1: Conversation with Gods, Wu Bai Wu Bo Bi ; 与神对话 ,有拜有保佑

The first book focuses on introduce the origins of worshipping practices, the various gods, the temples and the festivals.

Throughout the book,there has some interative pages to adds a fun layer of surprise and discovery, encouraging readers to actively participate as they explore the book

Bookmark

The bookmark’s message playfully suggests, “No need to Google it when worshipping,” further enhancing its playful nature. This addition underscores the idea that by reading this book, readers can gain an understanding of worshipping practices.

Book 2: Worship Handbook ; 神明急救箱

The second book takes a more practical approach, demystifying the act of worshipping step-by-step and outlining common etiquette and taboos.

The second book features a simple tutorial on drawing a fortune stick presented in a zine format. This not only boosts interaction but also infuses a playful element into the reading experience.
