Wano Castle

by matildesponchiado on 31 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Hey there, I’m Matilde Sponchiado, a student with a focus on environment. In this post, I’ll walk you through the breakdown of my recent school project that I have achieved thanks to my teachers in Side Academy.

                                                                          WANO CASTLE

I based my project on the anime One Piece. In particular, I recreated the castle from the Wano story arc. I intended to realize something in the style of the live-action for the series on Netflix, so we tried to make it as realistic as possible but managed to keep that glimmer of anime style and beauty. Working on this project, I learnt plenty of new skills in set dressing and improved my modelling techniques.

The sequence of the scene where made in Unreal Engine 5. In the sequencer, I created the movement of the clouds. For the editing part, I used Da Vinci where I assembled the cover that was made in Photoshop, the render from unreal, and the song that I adjusted for the video.

Wireframe

I modeled the castle and the trees in Maya principally because with this software I could create all the shapes that I wanted. It was a real deal to make the big tree so I tried new techniques and I used some lines as the skeleton of the tree.

Assets

Materials and UV

I created the asset’s texture in 4k with Substance Painter and it was based on the udim of Maya. This was a really important passage for my project because it took a lot of time in particular for the castle that has a lot of details on the roof. Also if the uv were not correct the textures would never have made the most.

Here below is the material that at the beginning I created in Unreal for the waterfall. With this material, I created an instance that was animated and it was the base for the waterfalls that are now present in the project.

References

For the castle model, I took inspiration from Osaka Castle in Japan. I drew the environment from some shots of the anime. Here are the references.

Programs

For the project i used the following softwares:

1) Maya

2) Substance Painter

3) Unreal Engine 5

4) Nuke

5) Photoshop

6) Da Vinci 18

Thank you very much for scrolling through my post.

I also wanted to thank everyone who supported me through this marvellous journey. I realized I love making 3D art because it makes it possible to create what before was just a vision in my mind. I can’t wait to start another project! I hope you enjoyed my post, and I wish the best of luck to everyone :D
