The End of Witches (and more)

by MelissaD on 30 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Hi, my name is Mélissa, and I've been studying concept art for two years now. This is my first time entering a contest, so I decided to make this a special occasion, by upgrading the very first concept art project I've ever made, "The End of Witches." I hope you'll enjoy it...

Round of applause for our sponsors

I am going to share with you two projects. The first one is titled “The End of Witches”, an RPG-style video game that combines witchcraft and the industrial revolution, in a steampunk universe.

The game is set in late 19th-century France, where witches and humans live in complete harmony. Witches possess special powers that enable them to create revolutionary mechanisms. Thus, witches provide humans with all the technology they need to advance humanity.

But peace came to an end when Léon Simmonet, an airship company's CEO, lost his wife, murdered by a witch. Traumatized, Léon decided to lead a rebellion against the witches, in the hope of revealing the danger they represent. What starts out as a simple rebellion, turns into a full-scale civil war.

15 years later, after having lost her entire family in the war, a young witch, named Aurore, decides to do everything she can to stop Leon and restore peace. To carry out her mission, she tries to hide her witch's identity by pretending to be a maid traveling with her broom on her back.

Aurore is the protagonist of the story. I've represented her child version (when she and her family were being hunted by the witches hunters), and her adult version (15 years after the beginning of the war).

Let me introduce you Jack, the crow on her shoulder. He is Aurore's familiar and best friend. He accompanies her wherever she goes, and helps her in her quests.

Léon is the antagonist of the story. I've represented a version of him before the war (when he was happy with his wife), and another version of him, 15 years later.

For the sake of his rebellion, Léon used his influence and wealth to establish an anti-witch brotherhood. They hunt down witches and collect their precious green blood to create their own technologies and weapons.

Here is an illustration of "Société Simonnet" Léon's airship company.

To conclude the presentation of this project, I'm going to present you Aurore's office with a point and clic game style animation. This is where her grimoire is located, in which the different spells that she has acquired are listed.

Now, i'm going to share with you my second project,  which was a my final year project from last year. The concept was to mix two existing universes. I decided to rethink Teen Titans's characters Raven and Beast boy, according to the graphic universe of AFK Arena.

For Raven's props, i opted for her bed, her spell book and the Teen Titans's communicator.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my projects. I hope you enjoyed it. Participating in the rookies was a real challenge, which I am proud to have taken on. I learned so much, especially from my mentors and classmates. I want to take the time to thank : Anthony Assandri, Laurent Miny, Roland Sarvarie and the students of Artline for everything they have given me.

Thank you very much again.

Mélissa Damascène.
