Round of applause for our sponsors

This is an animation project that I made as an improvement (or so I tried) on a previous dialogue assignment at CG Spectrum school of Digital Art and Animation.

The audio is from the movie Comedy of Terrors, from 1963, with Vincent Price and Peter Lorre.

Now see the original one that I did in 2022. Dull stuff, right?

It is fine, I suppose, but our eyes kind of ping pong between the two characters and the poses are not particularly interesting.

So, to improve on this, I started by making new storyboards.

Notice the animatic is longer than the final animation turned out to be. I ended up choosing to do less, as animation is quite a time-consuming art form.

Anyway, for this project I wanted to try and combine 3D backgrounds with 2D animated characters. So, after creating a 3D environment of a castle room in Maya, I had to figure out the shots.

I used Mari and Substance Painter for texturing the objects in the environment.

Then, it was time to do the animation.

In order to better combine the 3D and the 2D, there was some light and shadow work that I did using Nuke.

These are images of the environmetn before said color treatment. The flames, seen in the torches and candles, were also 2D animated.

And these are some of the shots after some work in Nuke.

Now, we get to Toybox Titans. This is a video game that is in contest for Game of the year, here at the Rookies Awards. The game is about some 1980s action figures having adventures in a children's room. Since all of these toys were intended to be based on their own cartoon series, I had to create this animation to show how they all would look like in cartoon form.

Note that the video was created in the old 4x3 format. You will also notice that most of the animation in these characters was done on twos and threes, as it was the case with the shows that we took as inspiration. The drummer and the keyboard player were even animated on layers, imitating the type of limited animation done in Hanna-Barbera shows, for example.

See the extended cut, with the effects, that was used in the project.

I hope you enjoyed this entry. I will leave you with my most recent animation reel.
