Collection of 3D Works

by phiradakan on 1 Jun 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

This entry is a collection of my 3D works from my time at the Savannah College of Art and Design as a Visual Effects student. The work includes modeling, lighting, FX, and look development work.

"The Nature of Time"

This work is a fully CG sequence, visualizing the monologue excerpt from the TV show Outlander (season 5, episode 5).

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, Dialogue by Caitriona Balfe, Music by Bear McCreary

Software used: Houdini, Maya, Redshift, Substance Painter, Photoshop

Here are screenshots, showing the continuity of tone and color throughout the sequence

The mood board, reference, animatic and inspiration :

I took a lot of visual inspiration from the cinematic title sequence which offers a more abstract visual and also a great storytelling method for a shorter timeframe.

Selected Breakdown

Modeling a pocket watch :

- for a more curvy body, I model the watch in Maya

- for Houdini, I use the trace node for the dial number and the hands

Here is the visualization of erosion of the chess board mountain

In Houdini, using attributetransfer node to transfer Cd attribute for two different texture.

Using burn attribute in pyrosourcespread for transition between old and new texture in shot 7, then assign color to the attribute (Cd) to black and white, then use blurattribute for a smoother / gradient transition.

Now for the transition, using the black and white in Cd attribute as a blendcolor in the Redshift material blend (red and green backgrounds are the old and the new texture).

The Dandelions

1. "Dandelion's Home"

Fully CG assets and environment are made in Houdini; the additional color grade was done in Nuke. The project focuses on proceduralism and optimizing the scene.

The first scene consists of dandelions in glass domes.

Software used : Houdini, Redshift

References and inspiration :

Progress :

Using groom tools to generate the fur part of the seed. The dandelion model relies on copytopoints node in Houdini and then pack geometry for optimization.

2. "Gone with the Wind"

Since I have the dandelion model, I have the information on the point each dandelion seed was copied to. I could use the points for particle simulation for the blow.

The lighting and mood are supposed to be more dramatic and irrelevant to the Dandelion's Home.

Software used : Houdini, Redshift
