Round of applause for our sponsors

Here is my demo reel for compositing. Please kindly scroll down to see my works.

Dancing Roto

Integrating Roto and BG is an essential skill for Compositor, and I wanted to hone that skill, so I chose to use footage of dancing  2 characters. Due to the rotational movement of the person, Tracking did not work well, so I had to do it manually. The most challenging part was the BG integration, because the people were overexposed and the highlight was completely white, so it was hard to choose a matching BG. The only one that matched the camera angle and atmosphere was found, so I cleaned people from that footage, adjusted the lighting and coloring to match the main characters.

Cleaning the Car

Cleaning is an inevitable task for junior compositors, so I needed to practice. Since the subject of this project was a car, I came up with the idea of using the F-rig-removal node instead of the usual Patch-based cleaning. But partially sections where the node did not work well, I used corner pins to complete the cleaning using the Patch method.

3D Projection Mapping

While attending my College, I had an assignment to work with 3D in Nuke. Since Compositors do 3D Projection as well as 2D, I wanted to learn how to do it myself. I also saw a tutorial on compositing snow and wanted to give it a try, so I decided to combine the two. To learn the basics of 3D, I chose a 3D camera motion footage with little movement. Then, I made a sky replacement, combined snow using the keying technique, and used the set extention method to extend the ruined castle with another castle material. After that, I  integrated the images into 3D Card and 3D Geometry to project them. 3D Geometry does not work as well as Maya, so it was difficult to make minor adjustments at the edges, but the final result was satisfactory.

Keying

As I watched the Compositor's demo reels, I learned that some people used the open source named Tears of  Steel. There were a few shots that were suitable for Keying, so I downloaded the EXR and worked hard on Keying. I was torn between the Additive keyer and the Hair key when I kept the detail of the hair, but after comparing them, I chose the Hair key Gizmo because it was suitable for this plate. For the background, I combined various free textures to complete a single back ground, and put the fictional cities through the window. The main character's eyes are looking upwards, so I needed to place something there. I  wanted to make my hologram, which always appears in Si-fi movies, so I downloaded a free CG modeling, projected it in 3D Card, and wireframed it. Originally the color was blue, but I changed it to a red hologram because of a red   reflection on the main character's face.

Screen Replacement

I wanted to try Screen replacement, so I used iPhone's Plate, a material often chosen for this purpose. The initial tracking was slightly off, so I had to manually adjust the scrolling screen to the phone. Also, since I chose a dark scrolling screen, I used the keying method to project the reflection of the fingernail on the screen to make it more realistic. The scrolling screen was animated and slid with the timing of the fingers, showing that even as a compositor, tracking and animation skills are necessary.

Thank you very much for watching my reels, I hope you like it.
