Round of applause for our sponsors

I've been working on an exciting automotive design project called the Alfa Romeo Rinnegata for the Rookie Awards this year! This journey has been incredibly enriching, offering me a fantastic opportunity to dive deep into aspects of the design process.

From the initial research and exploration phases to sketching and bringing the final concept to life, every step has been a valuable learning experience. I'm looking forward to sharing my progress and seeing where this adventure takes me!

I kicked off the project by putting together some mood boards and gathering inspiration to set the right tone and direction.

The designs by MAKE HASTE CORP stood out to me at this stage, especially the Triad, which features an edgy and dynamic blend of angular yet harmonious shapes. Super cool concept! I also drew inspiration from STAR WARS, aiming to weave in an element of mystery. This combination is shaping up to be something truly unique and exciting!

The inspiration is driven by motifs I found relevant to guide my process such as pure racing from FORMULA 1 that evokes a sense of thrill.

Down the line, we have the X-wing battle drone with angular surfaces followed by The Patriot-1920 by MAKE HASTE CORP which showcases great use of negative space. Finally taking reference from the Alfa Romeo 4C's front graphic "V" that trails along the surface to give brand recognition to my concept.

Next up is the ideation sketching phase of the process. Quickly capturing emotion and gesture using a rendering marker to get started with side-view motifs that align with my established direction and highlight developments that stand out.

Same approach to the front and rear ideation sketches using a drawing tablet.

Here's the first design iteration of the project. Picking out features in the design I wanted to keep for further developments such as a dynamic silhouette, minimal front headlights and expressive side view.

Side view renderings I wanted to visualise for the concept as well as experimenting with soft and harsh surface transitions.

Another round of sketching using good old pen and paper to fine-tune ideas from the previous iterations to solidify the final concept.

Finalised rear view design as well as some front three-quarter sketches.

This rear view is what I was looking for during the entire sketching phase and fits my established design criteria. Very edgy, with the use of negative space. (And of course, the middle rear tail light is totally inspired by a lightsaber)

A refined and cleaned-up front three-quarter rendering for the final concept.

And finally, we have the rear three-quarter view. It's been an interesting experience getting to this point and hopefully, I'll learn more about the automotive design process.

Share your thoughts about this concept with me too.
