Animated Music Video - Eternal Dream

Juan Manuel Blanco Araujo
by rndmprxjcts on 30 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

The proposed project focuses on the creation of a music video through an innovative combination of 3D and 2D animation. The animation will be developed using Blender, with the aim of fusing three-dimensional visual elements with superimposed 2D drawings, thus creating a unique and creative visual style.

Round of applause for our sponsors

I am Juan Manuel Blanco Araujo, passionate about the visual arts, currently completing higher education in 3D Animation, Games and interactive environments, looking to take my first steps in the industry. I am part of an artistic collective, Random Projects is a creative agency that is aimed at the global market that is the internet. Having as its headquarters the website www.randomprojects.es where we will exhibit our work. This website is focused on following a NetArt style, in which the user can interact with the artistic universe of Random Projects.

The production phase in the development of an audiovisual project such as a music video is a crucial period where creativity and technique come together to turn ideas into reality. This is where previously designed concepts come to life through the creation of visual assets and the implementation of animation techniques. It is a process that requires careful planning, execution and constant attention to detail to ensure that the artistic vision is effectively realized. Throughout this process, iterations, revisions and adjustments are made to ensure the quality and cohesion of the final product. It is an exciting and challenging moment in which ideas are transformed into a complete and captivating visual work.

The production phase unfolded in a series of meticulously planned stages, beginning with the creation of the essential assets for the video clip, such as 3D models, textures, and animations. Blender was used as the main tool to carry out this task, taking advantage of its powerful capabilities to model and animate both characters and settings in three dimensions. The process involved careful execution of the creative ideas conceived during the design phase, where the artistic vision of the production team was sought to materialize.

Once the three-dimensional assets were created and perfected, 2D animation techniques were integrated using Grease Pencil. This phase was instrumental in adding layers of depth and visual detail to the project, incorporating doodle elements and other visual details that organically complemented the 3D animation. The main objective was to enrich the visual experience of the video clip, providing a distinctive and creative style that would capture the viewer's attention.

Throughout the production process, a rigorous review and adjustment process took place, where each scene was carefully evaluated and refined to ensure stylistic consistency throughout the project. Special attention was paid to details, ensuring that each element contributed harmoniously to the visual narrative of the video clip. Likewise, rendering and composition tests were carried out to guarantee the technical and aesthetic quality of the final images.

The theoretical framework of the project is based on the creation of a music video from an innovative combination of 3D elements for the background and robotic characters, along with 2D drawings for the animation and movement of the main characters. This technique, which fuses three-dimensional visual elements with superimposed 2D drawings, generates a unique and creative visual style that seeks to offer a visually striking experience for the viewer.

The origins of this approach lie in the evolution of digital animation and artistic experimentation with various visual and sound media. As technology has advanced, tools like Blender have emerged, which have democratized the process of creating 3D animations, allowing independent artists and creators to develop complex, high-quality visual projects. At the same time, being an open source program allows the community to create new tools based on the same program, offering a greater wealth of possibilities.

The integration of 2D drawing elements into 3D animations has gained popularity in recent years, especially in areas such as short films, music videos and advertising, thanks to the promotion of tools such as Grease Pencil. Part of the Blender 3D animation software, this tool allows users to draw directly in three-dimensional space and create 2D animations efficiently and creatively. Furthermore, the advantage that this tool has is that once you have drawn the line, which is constituted as geometry, you can apply modifiers specific to the 3D environment.

For example, we can see in the first image what the state of the original line drawn is and in the next image the result after applying modifiers to the same line. Specifically, it has noise, hue, rim, shadow and glow modifiers.

With this we manage to completely change the properties and tonality of the line, thus offering much more attractive movements. That is why this tool is already beginning to be implemented in the pipelines of production companies such as Marvel, creator of Spiderman Across the Verse.

The development of Grease Pencil has been significant, evolving from its early versions as a simple drawing tool to becoming a powerful animation tool that offers artists the ability to create high-quality animated content. The creators of Grease Pencil are Daniel Martínez Lara, a Spanish animation director recognized for his work on films such as "The Illusionist" and "Snow White", and Antonio Vázquez, a software developer specialized in animation and visual effects tools. Their collaboration has resulted in a versatile and powerful tool that has revolutionized the way content is created and animated in Blender.

The completion of this project marks not only a personal achievement, but also a significant milestone in my professional career. Throughout the entire process, from conception to execution, I have witnessed the transformative power of the combination of music and animation in creating a unique and captivating audiovisual product.

Exploring the possibilities of 3D and 2D animation, as well as becoming familiar with specialized tools such as Blender and Grease Pencil, has allowed me to expand my technical and artistic skills in ways I had never before imagined. Every obstacle overcome and every progress made has brought me closer to understanding the complexity and potential of the creative process.

One of the most significant revelations of this project has been the deeper understanding of how music can be organically integrated with animation to effectively convey emotions and tell stories. Choosing the right soundtrack and meticulous synchronization between sound and movement have proven to be fundamental elements in creating an immersive and memorable audiovisual experience.

Additionally, this project has taught me the importance of strategic planning and collaboration in the success of any creative endeavor. Although my main role was that of animator and visual creator, I recognized the invaluable contribution of professionals in complementary areas such as sound design and music video promotion. This multidisciplinary collaboration not only enriched the project, but also broadened my perspective on the creative process as a whole.

Ultimately, this project has not only been an opportunity to create an innovative music video, but also a journey of self-discovery and personal and professional growth. I am excited to apply the lessons learned in future projects and continue exploring the vast and exciting field of audiovisual production.
