May the Fourth Celebration poster

Guillermo Bravo Luján
by guillebravolujan on 30 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

The image celebrates Star Wars Day, displaying a gathering of the main characters of the saga with each trilogy's protagonist raising their respective lightsaber. The composition is done against a dramatic sunset in Tatooine, the scenary for the background which features the main spaceships seen in the movies.

Round of applause for our sponsors

The poster features characters and spaceships from every era of Star Wars. It's done in a backlight condition with most of them facing the horizon. Most of it is done in Photoshop, which includes several techniques- the main characters have been built over reference images taking parts from costumes, toys and 3d assets from videogames. The rest of the characters are combinations from stills (specially for faces) and both toys and 3D models, with all the lighting made with adjustment layers. The ships have been rendered in Blender- their lighting quality though is a combination of Blender World edition and Photoshop manipulation, which helps achieving the engines effect and some cloud texturing. The background is a color gradient representing the Tatooine binary sunset, which gives the backlight effect to the characters, ships and the palace. The .psd document counts more than 600 layers.

The process of the creation of Anakin. It essentially consists on putting parts of clothing and the head over a reference model, adding shadows to make it cohesive and highlights and coloring to blend him into the background.

3D Environment for the spaceships, different rendering modes. I played with perspective using both distance and scale. To achieve atmospheric depth, I used volumetric scatter and using the original background image as the sky.

The process of the creation of the background in Photoshop using the Blender Renders. I used solid colors to paint glows and give depth to the ships that were more distant. I combined some different renders and masked out different parts on convinience. The desert is done with both adjustment layers and solid colors, using smooth and smoke brushes. I also used cloud images to give distance and add texture.
