Giulia De Angelis | The Rookies 2024

by GiuliaDea on 31 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Welcome to my entry for The Rookies 2024! It's a collection of four personal projects I have worked on during the past year. I hope you will enjoy walking through them as much as I did working on them!

Project № 1: Desert Eagle

This was my very first personal project: the Desert Eagle pistol. I started working on it during the 3D modelling course at CG Spectrum, deciding to challenge myself with a hard-surface game prop.

The project was created with Maya, textured in Substance Painter, and rendered using Arnold. The rocks used for the environment were downloaded from Quixel Megascans.

Post-production was done in Photoshop to enhance the final renders by adding more contrast to the lighting and a depth of field.

Project № 2: Kirkbrae House

This house caught my attention the very first time I saw it in Edinburgh. I couldn't help but recreate it and give it a personal touch.

I modeled it in Maya and added the overlayed details in Substance Painter on the second UV set (as explained later on). The final renders were done in Unreal Engine 5, using the Medieval Game Environment from Quixel.

I used two UV sets for this model. The first one is for a tileable material, while the second is for overlaying details such as dirt or moss.

The two sets of textures are then combined in an Unreal Engine material shader.

Project № 3: Black & Decker Hammer Drill

This is a project I decided to undertake to improve my hard surface modeling skills. Initially, I planned to model only the drill, but I ended up modeling all the other props in the scene as well.

Modeling was done in Maya, texturing in Substance Painter and the stickers/labels were created using Photoshop. Finally, the scene was rendered using Arnold.

Project № 4: R&S M3TR

My most recent project is military communications equipment from Rohde & Schwarz - a digital radio with its amplifier and a portable handheld transceiver. It was an interesting and challenging hard surface model, and I enjoyed working on it the most so far.

This project gave me an opportunity to learn a lot about lighting and setting up a scene in Unreal Engine.

I modeled the equipment in Maya, textured it in Substance Painter, and rendered it in Unreal Engine 5. I used a scene from the Unreal Engine Marketplace - Apartment Tech Props from Dekogon Studios.
