For my final project for my uni course, I decided to make a short 3D animation in an NPR style inspired by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Persona 3 Reload.

With the original character designs that I made for this project, I was aiming for a Y2K Japanese tokusatsu/magical girl look for the main character, with the little creature being her companion. The robot was made to look like a soulless corporate one, with the main inspiration being the corporate memphis art style. I modelled and rigged the characters, giving them all driver bones with intuitive custom bone shapes.

Various iterations of the cel shader before later achieving the final look.

The shader was made by making three distinct areas for highlight, mid tone, and shadow. These were then used as masks for their corresponding colour textures. This method allowed me to have complete control over the colours I wanted, as well as the intensity of the hatching effect that I made. The line art (both the dark blue outline and the white silhouette) was made using Blender's grease pencil. The environment was made before I decided to go for the cel shaded style, so it needed to be simplified a lot to fit with the characters.

Vector art animated ads that I made in Adobe Illustrator for the first iteration of the environment. They unfortunately ended up unused in the final version.

For the final animation, I rendered it at 12FPS and removed motion blur to give it more of a 2D look. I made some sparkle effects that are constrained to always face the camera to push the 2D style further. The camera follows a curve that spirals around the character for the final shot to give it some dynamic movement.
