3D Characters

by sandrasondell on 30 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Hello, my name is Sandra Sondell and I aspire to become a 3D character artist! These are my two most recent characters. They are both personal projects to learn more about anatomy, form and structure of the human head.

Round of applause for our sponsors

Nicole

I´ve only sculpted a man and a zombie before, this time it was time to make a woman! I wanted to make her as photoreal as possible and learn more about facial anatomy along the way. This is Nicole!

Some more renders with HDRI Lighting

The process

First thing were lots and lots of references of female faces and anatomy. Then I started sculpting in Zbrush.

When I felt that the basics was done I took her into Maya for retopo and UV.

I handpainted the textures in Substance Painter and went back and forth between some more details in the sculpt and more details in Substance Painter.

I then went on a reference run and got some new references for the hair and used Xgen to make it happen.

Gunnar the zombie

My friend got the idea that we should sculpt Zombies for a scene he was making. I decided to start by sculpting the skeleton first, then the muscles and skin. It was a very slow process but I learned so much about anatomy along the way, I really think it was worth it! This is the result of my Zombie.

The Process

This project also started with a reference hunt! References of zombies, skeletons and anatomy.

I began sculpting the skeleton in Zbrush, then put some skin on the zombie but left some parts without.

I hand painted the textures in Substance Painter.

I made a basic rig and rendered the Zombie in Maya Arnold.

Thanks for watching!
