Quiet Dream

I'm happy to share my foundation project from my time studying at Think Tank Training Centre - this project was created during 4 intense weeks of modeling, sculpting, texturing, and rendering through the final weeks of the fundamentals term at Think Tank.

The goal was to match a 2D concept as best as possible, I chose a lovely concept called 'Quiet Dream' by Z.W. Gu.

Progress

Modelling: I began this project with a simple blockout inside Maya, as the intention was to match a concept closely, I set up my cameras and the basic elements immediately, such as the throne - in anticipation for sculping elements in ZBrush, I also made sure that my camera matching worked inside ZBrush itself by importing the camera I had aligned into ZBrush, this ensured that everything was in sync from day 1. I blocked out the character inside maya with basic geometry to best match the concept, and made sure the topology was evenly distributed for sculpting.

Sculpting: I sculpted all of the elements inside ZBrush, adding folds to the clothes, detail to the hands and rock. To capture the face as best as possible, I used a combination of ZBrush local symmetry alongside Stager, so I could sculpt the head in symmetry at world centre, but also tweak things in situ using Stager and Local Symmetry.

Groom: I created the groom using XGen and used a variety of modifiers to try and match the concept. I used the VRayHairNext material to render the hair inside VRay, which comes with many parameters to tweak the colour and specular interactions of the hair.

Texturing/Shading: For this project i used Substance Painter for texturing alongside Photoshop, and rendered the project using VRay.

Huge shoutout to my Foundation supervisor Andrew Justice, and my classmates throughout my time so far at TTTC I have learned and continue to learn so much from all of you, and you inspire me with every project!

Thanks for checking out my work, I look forward to sharing much more work next year!
