In this glimpse into my personal portfolio I want to show you the work I have done during my 10 month apprenticeship at School-ing and give you a glimpse of the architectural visualization specialist I will become in the future. I hope you like it.

Learning professionally

Hello everyone, my name is Francesc Vidal and I am an architect. During my degree, I fell in love with visualization as I was able to realistically represent the ideas I had in mind. However, when I compared myself with professional visualization studios, I didn't feel prepared for the working world, so I decided to continue my training. That's how I discovered School-ing, where I finally learned how to realize my visions and much more.

Under the sea

The project I was most excited to carry out during this course was the recreation of the Balfegó restaurant, located in Barcelona and designed by the studio Equipo Creativo.

The imposing blue curtains, 5 meters high, impregnate the space with a maritime tonality, blurring the shape of the premises and transforming it into an undulating, organic environment. The ceramic tiles on the floor mimic the caustics that form when light passes through the water, complementing the blue tones of the ceiling and walls to evoke the sensation of being underwater. In this environment, the eye is drawn to the large school of tuna suspended from the ceiling, revolving around a central column.

These curtains are the most prominent element of the project and one of the biggest challenges to recreate in the 3D world because of their texture, shape and the way they interact with light. The creation of the tuna school was complex, but the use of the ForestPro plug-in, developed by Itoo Software, greatly simplified the task. In addition, the Sini plug-in made it easy to replace the lights on this geometry, contributing significantly to the realism of the images.

My firsts steps

For the first project of the course, I chose to model The House at Praia Verde due to its captivating horizontality amidst a landscape dominated by vertical elements like pine trees.

The design features hidden windows and sliding doors, creating a floating effect and offering breathtaking panoramic views. A central opening in the wide floor slab leads to a small inner courtyard covered by a concrete pergola, providing shade and architectural interest.

Integrating pine trees into the rendering was challenging yet essential for scene authenticity. Additionally, the pool served as a reflective surface, showcasing the open-plan interior and outdoor patio covered by a sun lounging area.

Playground

In an already modeled space, I set out to investigate the capabilities of the Vray camera and delve into the world of image composition. This allowed me to create unreal situations, possible only in an intangible and virtual architecture.

Thanks to the Pulze tool, I was able to create different cameras with very diverse settings, bringing the space to life and exploring its possibilities from multiple perspectives.

Still-life in space

With this project, I wanted to combine furniture modeling with a reinvention of the classic still life, taking advantage of the freedom offered by virtual architecture to experiment with weightlessness. Thus, I was able to play with the composition of the image, showing an overturned wooden table and stools floating in space, while the still life as a whole tries to hold together, evoking its original form.

Pipila's House

The project seeks to give prominence to an imposing stone wall, extracted from local quarries in Mexico, which pays homage to the figure of Pipila, a hero famous for carrying a large stone on his back to protect himself from bullets. This wall is the most challenging element to render correctly in the renders.

Set in a Mexican ecosystem, the project sits on a vast expanse of land, surrounded by native nature. This creates pleasant and calming views from the bright living room, a space that invites one to sit and enjoy reading, taking advantage of the serenity of the surroundings.

The quiet valley

The idea of a library is often associated with a space of tranquility, where one can read and study in silence, interrupted only by the gentle rustle of the wind through the leaves. With this vision in mind, I designed a construction surrounded by a lake, evoking an ancient castle, and a green esplanade dotted with shades of yellow and white, which reinforce the serenity of the project. Bathed in the evening light, the library reflects its image in the lake, accentuated by the tall grasses and water lilies that populate it.

On special occasions, this silence is interrupted by the music of a band, which fills the valley with life and activity. This space becomes a place where people can dance or enjoy the spectacle, evoking the atmosphere of Seurat's famous painting.

Awaits the future

This is all the work I have done during my 10 months of study at School-ing, where I have acquired great skills in photorealism, skills that I will continue to develop in the future. In addition, I have enjoyed discovering that creative side that was dormant inside me.

Looking back at my beginnings and the images I created just a year ago during my studies, I can clearly see the improvement in my work. Now I can only dream of a future where I have more experience, a more trained eye for images and perfect my skills with various programmes.

If you want to follow my work and evolution throughout my career, I will be uploading my projects on Instagram @francesc_vidal.jpg.

Thank you very much for your attention, I hope you enjoyed it.
