Cabin in the mountains

Jessie Seymour
by JessSey on 30 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Welcome, I am Jessie, a second year game art student. This is my environment scene that I have created. It is a self led project pushing my skills with texturing and creating an atmosphere.

Round of applause for our sponsors

Hello! Welcome to my submission for the rookies this year. I am showcasing my final portfolio development piece from my second year studying Game Art. I've specialised in environment art and I really enjoy environmental story telling. For this module I decided to create an interior of a cabin set on the mountain side of Maroon Lake, Colorado, USA, during early spring. I drew inspiration from the cabins within Red dead redemption 2. I only created the living and kitchen space for this cabin as I had a time frame of 3 months to complete it and I did not want to over scope  this project.

Hero Asset and modular breakdowns

Here are my modular breakdowns to show the assets that I modelled and textured. I textured a lot of the assets together sharing 1 UV tile, this helped reduce the amount of space taken up by materials, but also allowed each asset to be baked and have their own bespoke textures. My hero asset was the wood burner and I used a Niagara particle system for the fire. I broke my modular breakdown into smaller sections of the assets so they could be viewed in more detail.

Surrounding area shots

For the surrounding area I used images of Maroon Lake in Colorado as my reference for the skyline. I created the trees from stacking 2D planes that I had hand painted and shaped into trees within Maya. They are based off of  Engelmann spruce which grow naturally in that area. This was my first time creating foliage for games, I still have a lot to learn.

Dust particle/Fire system set up

For the dust particles and the flame I used a Niagara system. This was my first time doing this. I think the dust in the air really elevates the cabin scene. For the dust, I played around mostly with the windspeed, spawn-rate and the base-colour of the dust material and opacity to get it how I wanted it to look, the other settings stayed the same to how I originally set them up. And for the fire I had to set the Sub image size to 8.0 and 9.0 instead of both being 8.0 as it did not line up seamlessly with the flipbook. I duplicated this fire Niagara system and adjusted the speed for the second smaller flame that I have in place, this hopefully created a more believable fire than just one lone flame would.

I hope you've enjoyed seeing my art! I am super proud of this project and I think my favourite asset I made was the rug on the floor. It was fun to come up with the design and play around with the shape of it to show how the door opening would have moved the rug. Have a lovely day
