Cyanide Notebook is a graduation film produced by a team of eight students. Realized over 2 years at Isart digital, this film explores the theme of dreams and nightmares in a marine universe. Dive slowly with us into the depths of a journey you won't be able to forget!
Devastated by the sudden loss of her grandfather, Elie, a 16-year-old girl, experiences mysterious nightmares that lead her to delve into her grandfather’s old notebook.

Breakdowns
From the movie's get-go, our main inspiration for the marine side of our environment was Lovecraft's universe.
The City
About the city in our story, we were directly diving into the grandfather’s notebook when he drew his nightmares. This character feels constantly observed, that’s why for insisting on this part, we chose Art Nouveau architecture., which is known for its organics aspect. That relates us to the circle shape of eyes and wave shape. It allowed us to strengthen the city's strange look.
Technical aspects
During the production, we used Houdini-Solaris for more details for the city and mixed it with projection for building textures.
The Lighthouse
In line with Art Nouveau, we kept this architectural style for the Lighthouse. It linked the universes together and maintained this common thread. In this universe, we wanted the loneliness feeling with a poetic touch. For our main character, Elie, the Lighthouse is the only thing that links her to reality.
Our challenge was the island's eye. According to the plate, creating a real organic eye in 3D was impossible because we needed a soft floor when the actress walked. So, to solve this problem, we were inspired by a specific stone formed by the sea: the "Limestone". It has the particularity of having a porous appearance with filaments that it makes. Perfect for an eye and perfect for our constraints about the ground. Also, we needed central filaments to support the lighthouse, and that would had a particular iris's illness.
