3D Character Modelling and Texturing

Megan Grobler
by MeganG on 1 Jun 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Hello, my name is Megan Grobler! This is my process of creating my first 3D Character, Guppy, for a second-year assignment at the Animation School. Currently, this character is being rigged and will be posed and animated in future projects!

DESIGN PROCESS

Concept Art and Character Information:

Guppy is a professional athlete who excels in aquatic competitions. Although she is semi-aquatic, she prefers to live on land due to her rare water allergy. She rather uses oils to keep from drying out. Staying in the water for long periods will irritate her sensitive scaly skin, often causing her to lose scales. However, Guppy does not let this obstacle define her and continues to work towards her goals. She wears a full-body wetsuit, infused with her special oils, as protection and keeps emergency oil vials around her neck. She is dedicated and focused on her training but still maintains her cheerful and social personality. She can, however, be a bit of a sore loser…

3D Model and Wireframe:

She has been modelled in T-pose with animation-ready topology in preparation for future rigging and animating.

Texturing:

I made use of a painterly, stylised approach to texturing Guppy. Exaggerated paint strokes are visible, but she still has naturalistic and imperfect textures.
