BUILDING A CAREER

Carmen Cañamero
by CarmenCanamero on 29 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Hi there! My name is Carmen. I am an architect and 3D artist aspirant coming from Madrid, Spain. In October 2023 I decided to enroll in School-ing to acquire the skills I needed to make Architectural Visualization my career. This is the result of 8 months of hard work as a Schooling student. I hope you enjoy it!

 A FOREST (PACK)

The Açucena House by Tetro was a significant challenge for me because of its non-orthogonal architecture. I had to familiarize myself with several 3Dmax tools and plugins, mainly the use of SINI software, grids, and  working pivots. I also encountered  modeling difficulties such as the triangular skylights and the spiral staircase.

However, it was the surrounding forest that required my greatest effort. I realized its importance, not only from a visual point of view but also regarding the scene's lighting. Our Forest Pack classes here were very convenient and helpful.

CATCH 'EM ALL!

In this case, we were asked to model an interior scene. I fell in love with this interior designed by KC Design Studio. I chose it because I saw myself having a lot of fun while working in this project. On top of that, it had many different materials that I wanted to pratice with: terrazzo, wood, plastic, metals, fabrics...

This project helped me learn the process and method I should follow from then on: modeling of architecture, chosing  lights and cameras, adding furniture and materials,  and then adding small details and styling.

Decorating and styling was harder than I thought. The original apartment was owned by a figure collector. I had to find toy figures that fit the mood of the project: joyful, tender, colorful, and delicate. I did many tests, and not all the figures worked well in the scene. The Pokemon figures I found on Sketchfab - modeled by the artist nguyenlouis32, were just perfect.

THE ART OF FAKING: The Day Photoshop Came into My Life

I'm amazed by the digital matte painting and  image combination. I was very interested in learning this technique from my teachers. I find it very useful for situations where 3D doesn't look quite realistic.

These are my first works. They still have a lot of room for improvement. I can't wait to continue learning and practicing every day.

RATTAN: The Vine Art of Furniture Weaving

Modeling furniture is an activity I love. Some people relax knitting, some people prefer gardening... Personally,  what relaxes me is moving vertices.

Whenever I choose a project, I try to make it a challenge for myself. In this case, I was curious about rattan furniture. I found  the Vray Enmesh modifier  extremely useful.  I also learned how to do it geometrically. The tying ribbons were the hardest part.

¡VIVA MÉXICO!

For my retail project, I selected the restaurant  'La Tequila' designed by LOA Architects. My aim was to infuse the images with a distinct Mexican character and to go further into VRay and Substance Designer materialsI also learned the basics of TyFlow, which I used to fill the bowl with lemons.

Carrying out this project was especially tough. It made me gain a valuable lesson that I believe will greatly benefit my professional journey: dealing with frustration. I learned the importance of perseverance and resilience, not giving up, and moving on. Step by step. Little by little. Eventually, I began to see some progress.

WORK IN PROGRESS: A Sneak Peek Behind the Curtain

These are some drafts of the projects I'm currently working in. This time, I'm trying to explore a more artistic approach for Architectural Visualization.

For this project, we will be given the opportunity to work close to a Creative Director from one of the industry-leading studios. I'm sure it will be a very valuable experience for my training to receive feedback from such an experienced professional.

SHUTTER CLICKS: How to Improve Composition

During these 8 months, I've learned that the most important aspect of an image isn't how detailed it is. An image needs to have good composition and lighting to work. One of my new habits is always to carry a small camera with me so that I can take photos every day, practice and learn composition.

RIGHT WHERE I BELONG

My time at School-ing is being tough, yet very rewarding. Now I'm convinced Architectural Visualization is the right career path for me.

I can only express gratitude to my teachers Adán Martín and Eduardo Rodríguez for their dedication. Also, to my classmates - I adore them and I also learn a lot every day from them. But above all, thank you for your time and this opportunity you give me to showcase my works in this contest. Good luck to everyone!
