Introduction

The projects shown in my portfolio have been made during my spare time alongside my studies for my Master's at Cologne Game Lab. I love to learn new processes through every character and add what I learn from each one to every new project!
Thank you for looking through my portfolio and I hope you like what you see!

Mouse Knight

A lil stylised character of a concept I really loved by Ma Mulook:

I fell in love with the shapes and outfit so I wanted to recreate it!

The goal for his project was to focus on improving stylised proportions whilst also improving my texturing skills. They were sculpted in Zbrush, then taken into Maya to improve the hard surface, retop and UV- Finally going into Substance for both the bake and texturing.

Rikku - Final Fantasy X-2 Fanart

I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan, so I wanted to try this style out and came to the conclusion I wanted to do Rikku! She's my favourite character from the series and was most recently seen in 3D on the PS2 in 2003.

This project was a big challenge for me, it was a style I had never attempted before but I knew I wanted to try my best. I knew the project would introduce me to a variety of new skills which would be useful for many future characters. The body, clothing and face were sculpted in Zbrush, whilst I made the hair-cards and hair placement in Maya using Xgen. The retop and UVing was also completed in Maya, with the baking and texturing being done inside Substance.

Ryudo - Grandia 2 - Retrogasm

I've always loved the concept of "Retrogasm" taking an already existing character from an older game and putting your own spin on it for a more modern approach if the game were to release today. My choice for this was Ryudo, from the game Grandia 2.

One of the main reasons for choosing this character was to push myself to try more male character designs and also how to approach a character with a variety of different materials and colours used in one outfit. I also wanted to attempt a visual style that looked quite "retro" and keep the character quite lowpoly. The sculpt was created in Zbrush, then taken into Maya for retop and UV- With finishing the texturing in Substance.

Mona

Mona is a character by the artist Alexis Rives, they have drawn them multiple times in different outfits but I was drawn to this one most:

This project was a really interesting one for me as It is actually a character I made in between my BA to MA, but I didn't like it yet I still loved the character. Therefore I revisited the model and fixed multiple elements from the topology and UVs, and ultimately went for a new style. I've always wanted to try the sketchy Borderland style and thought Mona was a perfect character design to try this on.

The Very Capable Princess

This character is based on the very cute concept by 雨迟yuki: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/28AQzA

The goal with this project was to really experiment in a more cartoon style, whilst keeping everything to a lowpoly, game-ready standard. The character was sculpted in Zbrush to ensure clean rounded shapes, then the retop and UV was completed in Maya, with the baking and texturing being done in Substance.

Pink Rabbit

A very pink cute rabbit girl concept by Dannis Duan: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/VdV6Rb

This project was a fantastic learning curve for me, I really got to learn so much about stylised characters and how to pose them, both with their body and their face- A technique I have continued to improve on through all my characters.
