Mixing things up !

by Giselleyac on 28 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

This project was assigned to me in a class where we were required to choose a speciality and explore it's pipeline. I chose to be a prop artist and decided to create a set of small props that could be integrated into a game. My goal was to create props that had a variety of textures that were close to triple A game.

My goal was to create props that had a variety of textures that were close to triple A game quality during the period of 6 weeks. My pipeline allowed me to use Maya, Substance painter and Marmoset Toolbag. I learned how to do glass, metals and wood all in a bundle of textures. With that being said, I present to you a 360 view of the ensemble of kitchen tools ranging from small tools to a large appliance uploaded on Youtube.

To start my creative process, I did a search on the objects I wanted to include in myKitchen set such as mixer, mixer, spatulas and bowls. Then I chose to make a blocking of my objects in Maya. At this point, the objective was to work on proportions and to establish forms that I could do quickly or plan ahead.

Furthermore, I modelled my high resolution model. My goal was to demonstrate my ability to create a high resolution mesh that is polished that has a beautiful silhouette, which means I don’t wouldn’t count on normals to bring out details of my models: Everything is modeled. Additionally, I took the time to prepare my Color ID to be able to set up my scene in the viewer Marmoset Toolbag.

My textures were made in Substance Painter. I worked on my objects separately but I exported them in a group without merging everything into a singular mesh to speed up the export process. In this way, I had to only export a group of meshes, that functioned as a ensemble that respected the individuality of the objects wether it was baking shadows or creating textures.  This method allowed me to create several Uv Maps that did not overlap ensuring a very good quality of texture.

In conclusion, I enjoyed the challenge of making a small but detailed scene. I learned some valuable information on texturing and asset management while respecting a precise schedule with very little problems. I feel more confident in my modeling skills and look forward to more complex and challenging projects to come.
