by MilianoS on 28 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

For this project, I aimed to create something that combines the design principles of a monowheel and a sci-fi spaceship. I also wanted to achieve a look that includes hard surface elements along with organic-looking folds. Used a L-poly to H-poly workflow, Modeled in Maya Textured in Substance and Rendered in Marmoset.

-----------------------------------------------BREAKDOWNS----------------------------------------------

This showcases the breakdown of how I formulated and built the texture over time. This texture has too many layers to explain all at once, so I'll try to keep it simple. I started by mapping out the colors I wanted to use for the base. From there, I mixed and matched masks to create the folds in the material, which I then tiled. Once I was happy with that result, I added color variation and adjusted the AO values to make the folds pop. Finally, I added dirt and grime to finish it off. I also added a paint layer, set it to subtract, and broke up all the metal and dirt areas to make it less cluttered.

This master material was created in Substance Painter and is 100% procedural. I aimed to avoid sculpting for this project, so I generated all the details using normal maps. I have come to love this workflow, as it's a more non-destructive way of adding details to models. The render above was a quick Iray render done inside Substance Painter.

Breakdowns Above include the following:

FullQuality, Albedo, AlphaMask, Gloss, Incidence, Metalness, Normals, Reflectivity, and Roughness

Modeled in Maya, baked in Substance Painter, then Rendered in Marmoset Toolbag 4

Used references that I took insperation from. Looking for concepts or real world implcations of things that would fit in the idea I wanted to present.
