Eamonn Stevens - 2024 FX, Modelling and Comp

by EamonnsFX on 27 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Work created as a part of my studies through Rising Sun Pictures, as well as personal work, and I'm hoping it shows off a wide range of 3D skills.

Major Dynamic Effects Project

During my studies at Rising Sun Pictures I was tasked to decide on a major personal project to propose, iterate on and finally deliver. For my project I decided to create a photorealistic bullet impact simulation using Houdini, with an emphasis on having as many procedural elements as possible to allow me to more easily change elements to respond to feedback, new elements and art direction changes. I utilized models from Poly Haven, as well a background plate from Pexels (credit to Mart Production) as a base for my effects, all of which were created by me in Houdini, rendered using Arnold and composited with Nuke.

As my first real self-driven project in Houdini, having touched the software for the first time only months before, I experienced many roadblocks and difficulties throughout the process, but through this I have learned an incredible amount and improved my skills in many aspects of the VFX pipeline and process. Throughout this project I utilized RBD simulations, pop particles, vellum grains and pyro simulations, and being surrounded by professionals who I could get feedback from and bounce ideas off was an incredible experience.

Procedural Forest Environment - Blender

Created using assets from Botaniq and GeoScatter

Sword 3D Modelling Exercise - Maya and Blender

Created as part of the hard surface modelling course at Rising Sun Pictures, I decided to recreate the "Throne Cleaver" sword from Destiny 2 (design by Bungie), modeled using both Blender and Maya.

Truck Destruction Sim - Houdini

Created as part of my studies at RSP, this project was my first taste of RBD, particle sims and pyro sims, as well as working within a VFX pipeline. The vehicle and vehicle animation are both EDU assets, background plate from Pexels.
