2023-24 Concept Pieces

Jess Davies
by Exovissa on 26 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

Hi, I'm Jess :) I've compiled a collection of concept projects I've created during the last 2 years of studying at University. My passion is more historical-based fashion and paintings, and rendering portraits - I hope you enjoy!

Lady of the Eclipse
A character concept design unit, part of a set of characters based around Celestial Bodies and historical fashion.

With this project, I wanted to further improve my full-body rendering skills and character design. My favourite thing to draw is the face and I often neglect to draw or render the rest of the body or try different poses, I also struggle with rendering different materials such as metals so I tried to include things, like the sword, that I normally wouldn't, to push myself further.

Some facial explorations I did and a final concept sketch, and below thumbnail sketches and moodboards.

A piece recreating Poison Ivy to fit the late Victorian-early Edwardian period, and an oil painting study created for both fun and practice.

For this project, I wanted to redesign an existing character to suit the style of an imaginary Gothic Romance/Fantasy film. I chose Poison Ivy for this project because of her unique design and supernatural connection to nature, which complements the Gothic Romance/Fantasy theme. This genre often features horror, mystery, and supernatural themes. Poison Ivy's association with dark romance and her ability to use pheromones to influence others make her a suitable choice for this project.

The Promotional Poster I created for our third-year university game Goblins Go Boom, and various concept sketches. The majority of my work for this project was UI so I didn't manage to work on as much character concept as I would've liked.

The promotional poster I created for my second-year university game, Atlas.
I was asked to design a village elder based on Tibetan culture and an owl. I did a lot of research on Tibetan clothing, including chuba's, xamo gyaise's, and the use of fur and wool for warmth in high altitudes. I found the research fascinating and learned a lot about a culture I hadn't explored before. And lastly, a few concepts of some cloud-like sea creatures.

Process + Personal Work

Whilst I've mostly been focusing on university work, I like to work on pieces like this for social media - I decided to add in a few progress shots to show how I tend to work on rendering.

Thank you for taking the time to read through this, I hope you enjoyed it. :)
