Student Project - Roto and Compositing

Soldier rotoscoped and all elements composited in this shot.

Worked with small team to look dev the power elements and eyes for shots in the sequence.

I also composited a close-up shot showing the telekinetic woman eyes powering up. The setup was also used for this shot although less visible.

I used a 3D camera track in Nuke to add 2D elements, the shield, bullets, ripples, muzzle smoke and environment re-lighting into 3D space. Another team member tracked the shot but the proxy geometry had difficulty with depth and did not match the plate. This took some careful placement of elements to match the 3D camera track and plate movements.

Relit the both characters with purple energy shield and muzzle flash bounce lighting.

Rotoscoping the soldier had its challenges. The character was moving with a large amount of parrallax and small micro movements of gun. The overlapping of the left arm, forearm, gun and scope made it difficult to separate parts, but this was important to be able to integrate muzzle smoke between the arm and gun roto shapes.

Compositing had some difficulties with the number of elements and time frame to complete. Firstly, I made a small animatic to match the actors actions and come up with a plan.

Muzzle flashes and smoke were separated so smoke could appear in front of the gun and muzzle flash behind the barrel. There were issues with light wrap around the soldier and gun from the over exposed exterior of the car park. The plate is also very dark making the relighting of the characters black clothing difficult.

The women character hand roto and lighting C-stand were painted out by other team members. The hand roto was useful for driving the hand effects.

I was happy with my efforts and what I was able to achieve on this shot.
