My journey in the land's of CGI 2'

Mickael Starantino
by Draina on 26 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

The second year at ESMA SCHOOL has come to an end, and I am really proud to show you my work. This journey has been incredibly rewarding, and I can't wait to continue growing and learning in the coming years.

Round of applause for our sponsors

The red fox

For this project, we had to apply what we learned in our fur courses. I chose to create a fox, an animal deeply embedded in our imagination, which makes it a real challenge because any flaw will be noticeable.

What I want to redo is the shot in the environment, giving it a real setting!

The Machaon Butterfly

For the insect project, I chose to create a butterfly to make a very colorful image! For the wings, I sculpted a displacement map in ZBrush, which proved very useful for adding credibility to the wings. For the colors, I used a complementary color harmony and touches of blue.

Very pleased with the result, I decided to take the project a bit further by rigging the butterfly and creating a short animation with a slight camera movement. I also did a bit of compositing to add depth of field and give a fantastic dimension to my shot.

The Nike Skateboard Shoes

A fun fact about these shoes is that I rarely wear them due to purchasing the wrong size a few years ago. Nonetheless, my affection for them remains at is fullest, prompting me to embark on a personal project to craft a lifelike rendition of the shoe as a VFX asset

The Tchoutchou

The initial undertaking of my first year was to design a scene utilizing basic primitives. I aimed to elicit a sense of awe and amazement by using toys that would resonate with young childrens.

I decided in my second year to use my new knowledge with grooming and some compositing to revisit the shot.

The Colorful Carpet

An hour-long project for an introduction to grooming with guide curves. I took the time to create a quick shader for the fur and used a Renderman preset for the ball

The Clock

This workshop project is my first-year final project at ESMA. The task was to create a story in two shots set in a workshop. I chose to depict a clockmaker passionate about astronomy, crafting a masterpiece in his spare times at night.

The masterpiece, called Svemir, actually exists and was created by Miki Eleta.

The Axe

An old project resurfaced; now that I have learned to use displacement, I wanted to put this knowledge to good use, and I am quite satisfied with the result!

The CamMap

The most challenging part of this project was completing the beautiful illustration by Sin Jong Hun.

The Hut

This hut is my final project from my second year and my first attempt at a stylized render! The goal was to create a stylized hut based on a character. I chose a witch and aimed to convey a sense of eeriness and unease.
