The Trapper's Hideout

Florin Simpson
by florinsimpson on 23 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

The environment portion of my final university assignment - to design a bounty hunter charater and their hideout/base of operations. My primary inspiration was the dishonored games, and tried to fit the environment within that established aesthetic.

Main Illustration and process images

The finished paintover of the room I created and rendered in blender. This is the main piece for the project and is intended to show the personality of the character though their environment.

First Thoughts

When designing the layout, I started with floorplan ideas and some quick sketches, before moving onto a 3D blockout which I could then annotate and doodle over the top of to figure out what felt like it was missing, and what I wanted to add to it.

After having annotated and deciding what I wanted to add, I went back into blender and added textures to the environment, as well as set dressing using various assets from sketchfab, (list of sketchfab assets used can be found here) and modelling a few simple ones myself. I also explored different camera angles for the scene before deciding on the angle that I used.

Character Portrait

one of my favourite things about the Dishonored games, particularly Dishonored 2, is the beautiful character paintings that can be found in-game throughout the levels. And since I was trying to fit my character and environment within the Dishonored universe, I decided to have a go at painting a portrait in a similar style. Whilst it isnt a perfect immitation of the style in the game, I'm still very happy with how it turned out and think it adds a fun extra detail to the project.
