Gabriela Harper Sherwood Final Year Concept Art Collection

Gabriela Harper Sherwood
by GabrielaSherwood on 23 May 2024 for Rookie Awards 2024

These 2 projects were both a part of my final year studying a degree in Concept Art for Games and Film at Staffordshire University. Through them I learned so much about environment concept design and they helped me add work I was proud of to my portfolio.

Round of applause for our sponsors

Hello,

My name is Gabi Sherwood, originally I am from South Africa but 6 years ago I moved to the UK and 3 years after that I learned about my dream job that I never knew existed.

This led me to where I am now, just finishing up my final year studying Concept Art for Games and Film at Staffordshire University!

TWIN TREE GLADE

Join me and step into the world of Twin Tree Glade.

Fantasy, magic, and nature themes are what appear most in my work and is why I chose these as the driving forces behind this project.

Welcome to the Witches Brew Cafe.

A place were you can buy magical brews made to order from your friendly local witch. Feeling unlucky? Perhaps try the clover infused brew sure to change your fortunes!

In the early stages of development I made use of 2D sketches as well as simple 3D blockouts made in Blender.

This helped to ensure I was working with correct scale and proportions throughout the project.

Throughout the project I went through many iterations of all asset designs as I wanted all details of the world to be designed with care and intent.

These were all made during the development for Witches Brew but were also used to create Crystal Collective.

Always keeping in mind my key themes;  Nature and Magic and how they work together to build this world.

Running low on potion supplies?

Why not head on over to Crystal Collective! They are sure to have just what you are looking for.

A painterly style was key to bringing this project to life and rendering pieces like these helped establish the visual direction for the project.

A big style inspiration for me was the Studio Ghibli films as I just love their environments and backgrounds and how they just perfectly capture the whimsy and wonder in their scenes!

Thank you so much for taking a journey with my into Twin Tree Glade.

I hope you enjoyed my project as much as I enjoyed working on it.

I am so grateful to have been able to work on a project like this as part of my final year and I can't thank my supervisor enough for her thoughtful and kind guidance throughout.

Mowgli's Adventure

This project is based on the Jungle Book. Taking an excerpt from the book to create an environment concept for a level.

This level follows Mowgli's journey from the cave he lives in with the wolves to the humans village to retrieve the red flower and to then bring this back to the cave.

The level would start out in the cave and the player is given the mission, they then make their way through the Jungle and into the village.

On their way back with the red flower in hand the player needs to make sure the fire does not die and needs to keep replenishing and refuelling the fire with sticks and leaves collected on the ground.

For the style of this level/world I was quite inspired by the games Crash Bandicoot and Spyro but also took some inspiration from the concept art from The Legend Of Zelda.

Throughout this project I made all my plant and tree assets in Blender.

To do this I created flat textures in Photoshop and used these as images on planes in blender and warped and manipulated these into natural plant shapes.

This was a new technique for me but I found it enjoyable to be able to make all my own 3D assets from scratch and use them in my level design.

Using all these assets I was able to create blockouts for my levels which I then used later on as a base for my final key art paint overs.

In addition to the jungle area I created a blockout for the village.

Fire Pot  Concept and Village Assets

Thank you for looking through my project!

This project was such a learning experience for me when it came to 3D in particular and I learned so many new ways I could implement 3D into my workflow that I still use all the time.

Thank you so much for taking the time to look through my projects.

I learned so much from my time at Staffordshire University and found my passion for concept art only grew.

I would love to find a job working as a Junior Environment Concept Artist and doing these projects gave me valuable skills for working in this field.

If you liked my work please feel free to go and check out my Artstation for more and connect with me on LinkedIn too :)
